Bills vs. Lions: By the numbers

A pretty decent summary, which has me more hopeful about the run game than I was before last night, but a bit less secure with the pass defense.

The Bills lost a pair of projected starters to injuries Friday night, in guard Quinton Spain (ankle) and cornerback Tre’Davious White (quad contusion).

Spain was seen arguing with coaches in an attempt to re-enter the game, but was later seen leaving the locker room on crutches and in a walking boot.

White told reporters he was “all good” following the victory in Detroit.

While the debate for how long and how often starters should play in the preseason, the Bills seemed to have avoided disaster, at least for now.

No, that isn’t the combined age of running backs LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore. The veteran backfield tandem combined for 94 yards on 14 carries against a stout Detroit defensive front. Friday’s performances by the 36-year-old Gore and the 31-year-old McCoy should inject a little confidence into a Buffalo ground game which has been anemic at best with its projected starters on the field.

On the other hand, third-round pick Devin Singletary had just one carry for nine yards – and a touchdown – Friday, while converted rugby player turned preseason feel good story Christian Wade went without a rushing attempt.

For the first time this preseason, Buffalo faced a starting quarterback in Detroit’s Matthew Stafford. Stafford, who missed each of the Lions’ first two preseason games, went 12-of-19 for 137 yards and a touchdown in his debut. Stafford was particularly effective in the intermediate passing game, as six of his 12 completions were between 10 and 20 yards. His longest completion of the night came on a 32 yard catch-and-run connection with rookie tight end T.J. Hockenson.

Josh Allen was far less impressive in what should prove to be his last tune-up before the regular season. Allen was just 3-of-6 for 49 yards and had an ill-advised throw into traffic picked off, but negated on a penalty.

If the Bills plan on keeping six receivers heading into the regular season, Duke Williams and Isaiah McKenzie aren’t making the decision easy. It looks as if John Brown, Cole Beasley, Zay Jones, Robert Foster and Andre Roberts are locks to make the 53-man roster, with the final spot going to either the 5-foot-8 burner in McKenzie or the 6-foot-3 red zone nightmare in Williams.

Both found the end zone in Friday’s victory; McKenzie on a six-yard end-around and Williams on a 16-yard snag from Matt Barkley.

If the margin separating the two is as thin as it seems, it may very well come down to who has the best showing against Minnesota in the preseason finale.

It’s worth noting that Ray-Ray McCloud may have kept himself in the race for the final receiver spot, hauling in two of his four targets for 29 yards Friday night.

Buffalo fumbled the ball four times Friday night, losing possession twice. The running tally sits at eight fumbles through three games, five of which were lost. The Bills were tied for third in fumbles lost a year ago (11) and posted a -5 turnover differential. The trend of coughing up the football seems to have followed the team into the 2019 preseason.
