    Sabres HAVE to resign Skinner

... but i get this sinking feeling it going to be seen as a mistake in the long term

skinner did what every pro athlete hopes for: had his best season just as he was becoming an unrestricted free agent

but is he really worth being paid like one of the top players in the league?

hes not much of a passer, having the somewhat rare distinction of being considerably behind in terms of assists relative to goals scored his whole career. he plays hardly any defense, is not on the penalty kill unit, doesnt contribute much in blocked shots or hits (smallish guy). hes not even a major scorer on the power play, never has been

and worst of all, he has been inconsistent as a goal scorer his whole career, 30 one year, 20 the next, 14 in a season he played 77 games. in fact, he only had one 30 goal season prior to this, and it was exactly 30 goals. 40 goals is an outlier for him

he is good at 5 on 5 scoring and finishing set-ups from jack, which could be the sabres biggest weakness, which is why he must be resigned

    but hes sort of a one-trick pony - 5 on 5 scoring

the sabres dont have the luxury to let him walk. they absolutely must try to find some magic as jack enters his prime years

he needs to show consistency and absolutely must put up at least 30 goals a season to show he was worth it, and to make up for the shortcomings in his game

i sure hope he does, but i cant help but feel like we will look back on giving skinner big money for a bunch of years as a big mistake
