He was the originator of the three-finger picking style that brought the banjo to the fore in a new genre.
He was in a band called the "Foggy Mountain Boys" The 1967 film "Bonnie and Clyde" featured their 1949 instrumental "Foggy Mountain Breakdown.
But, most of us would remember his work - although not knowing it was him - from his part from the "Ballad of Jed Clampett" -- the theme song of the Beverly Hillbillies.
