7:56 pm Yankees Still Arent Certain About Rotation
By DAVID WALDSTEIN
TAMPA, Fla. The Yankees are in the final week of spring training and are inching closer to a decision on the five pitchers who will comprise their starting rotation. But according to Manager Joe Girardi, the decision has not been made yet.
I know these guys are anxious to find out what we believe their schedules are going to be and when theyre going to pitch, Girardi said Thursday before the Yankees played the Baltimore Orioles. Were just not quite there yet.
Girardi said the issue would be discussed over the next few days in meetings with him, members of his staff and General Manager Brian Cashman and his staff. The hope, Girardi said, is to come up with a final five by Monday, but they are still collecting information as the pitchers make their final spring starts.
C.C. Sabathia and
Hiroki Kuroda, who signed a one-year, $10 million contract in the off-season, are the only two who are guaranteed places. They will pitch the first and second games of the season. After that, the Yankees must decide who among the remaining four Phil Hughes, Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia will get the final three slots.
Matters will only get more complicated in a month or so when
Andy Pettitte is scheduled to return, and one of the pitchers who earns a spot in the next few days will presumably then get bumped.
Hughes, who has a
2.03 earned run average in spring training, has obviously pitched well enough to make it as the No. 3 starter.
Garcia has pitched as if it were the playoffs, making his case with quality outings and surrendering only four earned runs in 12 innings (
2.92 E.R.A.).
Pineda, despite troubles with his fastball velocity, has a
3.31 E.R.A. He will pitch Friday night against the Philadelphia Phillies, and Garcia will pitch in a minor league game.
Nova gave his most recent audition by throwing seven innings in a minor league game Thursday. He allowed three runs, seven hits and a walk over seven and one-third innings. His E.R.A., not including Thursdays game, is 6.86, the highest of any of the starting candidates. But he went
16-4 last year and that counts for a lot.
