Everyone knows Cal cheats. But I've lost faith in him ever getting punished. It's blatantly obvious that he does something sketchy. Hell, sources around Nerlens Noel said that he had decided on Georgetown and then 20 minutes before his decision, they received word that Kentucky had made one last offer to him and he caved and took the money.

And the same sources now say that Noel is starting to regret his decision because Kentucky isn't the school he actually wanted to go to.

The inevitable has finally happened...Jim Calhoun has retired. There are some dark spots on his resume, but not only did he make Uconn basketball a powerhouse, he also make Uconn a legitimate college. It wasn't until the mid 90's that state legislators finally voted in favor of a billion dollar deal to academically upgrade the University of Connecticut. While he had his faults, his biggest issues were transfers and too many text messages. The APR nonsense is just that...nonsense. These were players leaving early for the NBA or transferred and didn't care about finishing out their last semester. Had Uconn had SEC style classes (how many points for a 3 pointer??), then the grades wouldn't look that bad.

Thank you Coach Calhoun for putting Uconn (is that in Alaska?) on the map. I loved having a coach who didn't give a shit about his appearance and who could admit a mistake. Ask him about Ryan Gomes. I also love that he knows he shouldn't take a pay cut when coaches with less wins and titles made more than him and when his program made a profit. At the end of the day, he did things his way. That may have involved a gray area, but he is a tough SOB from South Boston who had to help raise/support his family when his father died at 14. To quote current Uconn baseball coach Jim Penders, "or God's sake, before coaching basketball, this guy was a factory worker, grave digger, granite cutter, and headstone engraver. Why don't you go and tell him to quit while he's ahead? Go ahead, pick a fight. You're gonna lose."

Heh, talk about deflections... I'm aware of the Lance Thomas situation... We'll see where it goes... Meanwhile...

    Tami Hansbrough resigns at UNC

    http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bask...unc-fundraiser

Tami Hansbrough, the mother of former North Carolina basketball All-America Tyler Hansbrough, resigned her position as a school fundraiser Wednesday as the school continued to study trips she took with Matt Kupec, UNC's vice chancellor for university advancement.

Kupec, a former Tar Heels quarterback, resigned Sunday night after an internal review showed he had charged personal trips with Hansbrough to the university. Hansbrough had been placed on administrative leave.

Chancellor Holden Thorp told The (Raleigh) News & Observer on Monday that Kupec and Hansbrough appeared to have taken non-university-related trips to destinations where Hansbrough's youngest son, Ben, was playing basketball for Notre Dame. Thorp did not say how many trips the couple took.
2 resignations in less than a week...?

There isn't any deflecting, what does that have to do w/ Carolina basketball? hansbrough was there for 4 years already when his mother got that job. lance Thomas was PAID by someone. That's a little more serious.

I agree. This whole "super conference" thing sucks. But what can you do, college athletics is all about the cash and this way they make more. I know you and I are not only fans of one or two teams, but how many times have we gotten into it over ACC/Big East? You don't just root for your team, but also for your region/conference. I think the way college sports are going (already gone really) takes so much away from the tradition and rivalries that it's really just sad.

On the ND to ACC, while I dont particularly like ND at all, I think it is GREAT for the long term longevity of the ACC. If Football is what is the basis for all these defections to other conferences, a team with the namebrand like ND is huge. Plus the exit fee for the ACC got bumped up to $50 million apparently. Doesn't look like FSU will be going anywhere any time soon either.

I think we can all agree that ACC basketball will be the best league in NCAA! Definitely sucks that this will be the last year of the ACC VS. Big East thread, those are hall of famers!, but I guess now that Cuse and UNC are direct conference rivals it'll be interesting still.

I was considering trying to get tickets for the Syracuse - SDSU game on the Midway Aircraft Carrier down here in San Diego...$1,200 a ticket! The cheapest. Even if I had that much I don't think I could blow it on a single ticket. I'll wait until we get sent out somewhere near here during the NCAA tournament and use all that cash to get a lot more than one ticket.

I can't wait. It'll suck not having this "Big East/ACC Thread", but now it can just be "The ACC Basketball Thread". It'll be some fun rivalries between us Cuse/UNC guys, and all of my Duke friends (ugh.)

I love the addition of Notre Dame too, even though I can't stand them. Brings even more to the ACC now. Great football program (they're basically ACC football now), regardless of how well they play, and a good basketball and lacrosse program.

Not that many people here care, but NCAA Lacrosse might as well just take the ACC winner and crown them champions. 10 of the past 14 champions (since 1999) will be playing in the ACC (Syracuse-5, Virginia-4, Duke-1, Johns Hopkins-2, Princeton-1, Loyola-1) and even 7 of the teams that were runner up will be ACC (Syracuse-2, Duke-2, Maryland-2, Notre Dame-1, UMass-1, Navy-1, Johns Hopkins-2, Princeton-2).

....I love college lacrosse incase you didn't notice....

Never really got into lacrosse, despite living in Syracuse for 24 years and going to JD high school (perennial state champs in lax). Our basketball team also was pretty sick, undefeated my senior year and won the state champs (Andy Rautins junior year, Triche was a freshmen). And now Dajuan Coleman will be the third player we've sent up to SU in the last few years, pretty exciting to see as a JD alum.

Anyway, as good as those teams were I played football and we sucked.

    Really?

Hansbrough was hired as an associate director of development at the UNC School of Dentistry in December 2008, to serve as a fundraiser specializing in major gifts. Tyler Hansbrough was a senior at the time and helped the Tar Heels win the national championship later that season.
For all we know, she could have gotten that job in return for having Tyler return for his Senior season...

    Then, there's this: http://espn.go.com/college-sports/st...hletic-scandal

North Carolina chancellor Holden Thorp, whose tenure has been marred by several athletics-related scandals over the past two years, will resign at the end of the 2012-13 academic year, the school announced Monday.

The announcement came three days after Thorp answered questions Friday from the UNC Board of Governors during a closed-door meeting about the school's top fundraiser, Matt Kupec, and Tami Hansbrough, a gifts officer and mother of former basketball star Tyler Hansbrough.

Kupec and Tami Hansbrough resigned last week after Thorp discovered that the couple had charged questionable travel expenses to the school.
3 resignations now....? Nah, nothing going on there...

Do you have proof that Lance Thomas was paid by anyone? I'm sure the NCAA would love to see it.

Yeah, it's in court. Thomas just stettled that lawsuit so there is proof and the NCAA is looking into it. You are speculating on hansbrough, there isn't a shred of evidence to link him to what his Mother did.

Just over a month until the first Syracuse basketball exhibition tips off!

We don't need to start a new thread for 2012-2013 right? I'd assume just keep this gem of a thread rolling.

Blasphemy. There will be a 2012-2013 thread and it will be the best one yet.
