    Allergic to Beer!!

Well, i spent a good majority of my youth up to my late twenties drinking quite a bit. I have since slowed down and rarely drink.

A couple of years ago, after a long hiatus of non drinking, i got a hot rash on my face after drinking beer. I thought no big deal.

So, as time goes on, i realize that i am allergic to beer, but not all beers?

American beer out the window. never could drink it much, and not now especially. one swig of any american brew (Sans Sam Adams) will make me break out big time.

So, today i go out and see that oktoberfest beer is now out.

I pick up a mix of my favorites (Sam Adams / Spaten )

my face got so red and hot immediately!

    UGH

i can't ****ing drink a beer at all anymore, no matter what the brand!!

is there anything i can do?

Shit. can't even enjoy suds anymore.

    Try Redbridge beer.

I used to work at a liquor store and remember people who were allergic to beer buying this.

Here's what it says on their website...

Redbridge beer doesn’t need to make promises to stand out from the crowd; its very essence sets it apart. Redbridge is made without wheat or barley, so the approximately 3.2 million consumers who are unable to drink beer made with barley due to Celiac Disease or because they follow a wheat-free or gluten-free diet can once again enjoy a great tasting beer. Redbridge is a rich, full-bodied lager brewed from sorghum for a well-balanced, moderately hopped taste.

I'm not sure how it tastes, but its worth a shot. I know there are a few other varieties like Redbridge, but can't remember the name off the top of my head. If you do try it, let me know how it is and if you break out from it.

Is that your problem though? Gluten? Redbridge is Gluten-Free...did you break out when you drank it?

If Gluten is the issue (with only trace amounts in beer BTW) then bread would be deadly.

My condolences bro. No man should ever have to suffer through a beerless life.

I actually think I'm gonna cry just at the thought.

    bread is not problem.

maybe it's the hops or barley.

    dunno.

The higher quality the beer, the worse off i get.

someone send me a genny screamer.

see if i can handle that, lol..

You should check to make sure it's not a sulfite allergy. It appears as a preservative in some beers (and especially wines). My wife and S-I-L get a similar reaction if they have a lot of beer, though it's not as pronounced. Try German beer, which apparently cannot have Sulfites in it by law or Pabst Blue Ribbon, which is brewed in the german style. FWIW, if it is sulfites, it's a big deal as they are very prominent in anti-biotics based on Penicillin. That could cause a much, much worse reaction.

I remember back in the 70s some of my alcoholic friends who were legally forced to go on the wagon were sentenced to taking some sort of drug that made them violently ill if they drank any alcohol. Wonder if that's still done today?

I think the law you mean was repealed by the European Union, but most German brewers still follow the old brewing laws.

Might be a hops allergy but you won't know for sure until you try lots of different beers or get tested.

im right next to wichita, but i've been to the Brewing company before. Had the "flight of beers" tester they had, pretty cool. of course that was before i was allergic.
