Billy Crystal Signs 1 Day Deal

    Per Yahoo

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Billy Crystal will get to “look mahvelous” in pinstripes.

The actor will sign a one-day, minor league contract with the New York Yankees and play in Thursday’s exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Crystal, an avid Yankees fan, will work out with the team on Wednesday and will wear uniform No. 60 for the game—to be played one day before his 60th birthday. The Yankees said Monday they have the approval of baseball commissioner Bud Selig.
I see little Steinbrenner is following his father's footsteps. Sign as many old people as possible.

Watch they sign Charlie Sheen to a 4 year/$52 Million contract next and throw him into the rotation.

This "signing" is pathetic. It's just as fake as teams signing someone to a 1-day contract so they can retire as a member of the organization that they inked a 24-hour deal with. And,ultimately,it means nothing.

This is a stunt a team like the Rays would pull. Not the Yankees.

So...YankeeFan,how does it feel to see this team stoop to a bush league level to get some pub?

I don't think ANYONE is taking this signing seriously. The guy just turned 60 years old and personally I think it was an awfully nice move to go ahead and let him live out a life long dream and sign him to a measly ONE DAY CONTRACT. Take it for what it is, the Yanks just making a dream come true, even if it's just for one day.

Yeah, but there are places for fans to live out their dream-you know, fantasy camps.(Why the Yanks haven't set one up,I'll never know.)

Signing a 1-day deal to play during spring training is not the place to do that.

Understand I'm not knocking Crystal's love of the Yanks,or that he's going to live out his dream(even if only for a day)-just the venue of how he'll do it.

I hope the first pitch he sees is a fastball right up under the armpit. He does not belong out there. It's a joke. If he wants the experience, give it to him.

    You're right.

It was just as wrong for Garth Brooks to pop up at spring training and pretend to be a baseball player(as well as other famous people)as it is for Crystal to do the same.

My problem with Garth Brooks is the fact that he had something along the lines of 45 at bats during his stint... Crystal is doing it for one day.

Michael Jordan took a roster spot from someone during his stunt. I don't think Crystal, by playing in one preseason game, is doing nearly as much damage as Jordan or Brooks.

I'm a Yankees fan, have been so since I was a little kid (25 years), and I hated this signing. It's just silly, not needed in any way, and, if you stretch it...is kinda a small slap in the face to other Yankee fans. Its like saying "You aren't good enough, but Billy Crystal is so we are going to let him do this...."

One of my uncles friends went a couple of years ago as a present for his - oddly enough - 60th birthday.

As for Billy Crystal, put me in the "it was a nice thing to do for one of the great well known long-time fans of the New York Yankees" catagory.

Didn't Garth Brooks or some country singer actually get to play in a few games one year...it's spring trainning, why anyone would be up in arms about this is beyond me.
