Carlos GomezThe Mets paid a high price in prospects to land Santana, agreeing to send the Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.
Phil HumberGomez is what scouts like to call a five-tool player, a combination of offensive ability that includes power and speed as well as an above-average defensive game and a strong arm. He has worked to cut down a strikeout rate that was high during the early part of a minor league career that began in 2004 after the Mets signed him out of the Dominican Republic. He made his major league debut last May and hit .232.
Humber, 25, is the Mets' 2004 first-round pick who has made five major league appearances, including one start, over the past two seasons. He won 11 games at Class AAA last season, his first full year after having Tommy John surgery in 2005.
The Mets really needed an ace and now they have one. Of course the price was steep in prospects, but they were able to keep their lineup in tact.
Yeah and they didn't even have to give up Fernando Martinez
The Mets just got a hell of a deal
Gomez is the only one of those prospects worth a crap
On the Twins side, they really have botched this trade process from the beginning

I love this deal!!!!! I was never that high on Gomez that I thought he was untouchable. I think he'll be a good pro, just something that can be replaced. The guy I was upset at losing was Guerra. He's 18, throws 95mph, and his best pitch is a plus plus changeup. However, I'd rather trade him and keep Martinez. Humber is going to be a backend starter. Mulvey I liked, mostly because he's a better pitcher than his stuff. He does everything pretty well, but nothing that screams ace. He would have been a nice 3/4 starter for 10 years or so.
BTW. THE METS GOT SANTANA...WHAT A DAY!!!!!!!
I won't miss watching the Red Sox try to hit him a few times a year.
I'm just happy he didn't go to Boston and we didn't have to give up our promising young players.

Mets agree to terms with Santana
NEW YORK -- An offseason that had been all about who wasn't on the Mets' roster has executed an about-face and now is distinctive because of who almost certainly will be. Unless Johan Santana flunks his physical Saturday, he soon will become the starting pitcher the Mets desperately had needed, as well as the wealthiest pitcher in the game. A contract that will secure the latter distinction is in place. The Mets and Santana's representatives struck a deal Friday more than an hour after the original 5 p.m. ET deadline imposed by the league office Tuesday, when the Mets and Twins agreed to an exchange of players that, when completed, will recast projections for the 2008 National League East race and restore the Mets' image as a genuine contender.
Neither the value not the length of the contract is known, but executives in the game had said since early Friday afternoon that they expected Santana to have a contract through 2014 worth $139 million. That figure would reflect annual salaries averaging about $22 million and a signing bonus of about $7 million that would increase the 2008 earnings of the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner to about $20.25 million. The average annual value of the deal would be about $19,587,000.
The contractual agreement leaves the physical examination as the final hurdle before the Mets can link the Super Bowl and Super Tuesday with the addition of a superlative athlete who they hope will lead them in the World Series.
Santana was expected to have his physical this weekend or early next week at the latest.
The contract exceeds the value of the seven-year contract Barry Zito signed with the Giants 13 months ago and the $119 million the Mets agreed to pay Carlos Beltran from 2005-11.

He made it pretty clear after Zito's deal he was probably going to hit free agency. This just seals it.

I think you are jumping on the Twins too fast. They know what they are doing in with minor league players. If they Twins trade for the players I believe they will turn into some damn good players. While it might not look like it now, four years from know we may be saying the trade worked out for both teams or the Twins got the better part of the trade.
And the Twins are not hurting for pitching at all without Santana. People may think I am nuts because Santana is one of the best pitcher in MLB, but I believe he was not the best pitcher on the Twins. When Francisco Liriano comes back healthy from Tommy Johns surgury he will be the best pitcher in MLB. Add Boof Bonser as the number two and Kevin Slowey as the number three and that may be the best top three starters in baseball, and they are all young.
Now the Twins got an much needed outfielder and another pitcher. Two or three years from now the Twins will be winning the Central and making a run at the World Series. This year I think they will be okay, not yet ready to win the division but better then the ChiSox and Royals.
