So, a manager can do what he wants without first consulting the owner first?...

Yes. Most NFL teams are setup that way. Even Buffalo had a couple GM's with power. Polian and Donahoe and maybe Butler did not ask anyone when they released or traded players.

Then if owner does not like the GM body of work he gets replaced.

Williams, currently a free agent, had recently told ESPN's Adam Schefter that there were four teams he would not consider playing for -- the Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns and the Panthers. Carolina apparently is now an option again in Williams' mind with Gettleman's firing.

Very interesting development especially since it's being reported that Brandon Beane would have been the clear front runner for the job had he not left for Buffalo.

Also even if this is somewhat of a questionable move, it's another example of a team that is focused on winning and doesn't feed their fanbase buzzwords like 'process' and 'continuity' like Buffalo. Panthers went to a superbowl just 2 years ago.

Yup. Would have had the inside track to a gig with a franchise QB already in place.

something must have gone wrong recently, like a sudden disagreement with the owner or some kind of recent rise in sentiment against him

otherwise they would have just axed him sooner and given beane the job. at least you would think

if not and it was some kind of festering thing that finally boiled over then it was either poor planning by the panthers or they didnt really care if beane left

so did we get an up and comer gm who the panthers regret letting shuffle off to buffalo? or did we get a clone of a guy the panthers had no interest in retaining?

i say we let lit decide

Pretty obvious given reports that Richardson isn't happy how the GM handled the face of the franchise (Steve Smith) and now Davis + Olsen. On top of that he let Norman go who was a great fit in that system and the secondary promptly went to shit last year with him gone.

Also Olsen is a beast. Outside of Gronk and Jimmy Graham (Saints years) he's probably been the best TE in the league the last 5 years.
