A debtor's prison is a prison for people unable to pay a debt to another. Prior to the mid 19th century debtor's prisons were a common way to deal with unpaid debt. In the United Kingdom, the Debtors Act of 1869 abolished imprisonment for debt (although debtors who had the means to pay their debt, but did not do so, could still be jailed for up to six weeks).

Debtor's prisons varied in the amount of freedom they allowed the debtor. With access to a little bit of money a debtor could pay for some reasonable freedoms. Some allowed conducting business and having visitors over various hours. The father of English author Charles Dickens was sent to one of these prisons, which were often described in Dickens's novels.

In 1833 the United States eliminated the practice of imprisonment for debts at the federal level. Most states followed suit. It is still possible, however, to be incarcerated for debt; debts of fraud, child-support, alimony, or release fines can land a citizen in jail or prison, or prevent one’s release.

should we go back to debtor's prisons? specifically, for those people who accept welfare or unemployment checks and still haven't found a job.

No, but I am for a state that helps its least well off get back on their feet. I sir am no big fan of welfare, but if someone is rendered unable to work they need assistance. It would be nice if the church could step in, but quite frankly the Church doesn't have enough money. If someone can work and is not, and is not looking, then no they should not be subsidized. However we need social security for the elderly, foodstamps and aid for impoverished children, and unemployment insurance for those whose jobs have left them. We need to take care of those who were injured on the job. We need to assist students with college -say low interest loans to pay for the whole shebang. A nation is judged based on how well off its least blessed citizens are. I am not, however, for handouts. I don't think people should stay on government programs but I do think the government should provide handups. For those who are single mothers (God bless them all) the government should have subsidized child care and job training so they can pay taxes. I feel that the government should help its citizens get back on their feet but not make dependents. So I guess I am in favor of a quasi welfare state. Do you know what I am saying. I want the government to provide a safety net for its people, but I don't want this help shackling the needy and making them wards of the state.

Unemployment is good, but it should be variable with teh economy. When times are tough you should get longer on unemployment, when their cooking like now you should be able to find a job pretty soon. Disability and social security are good. My father was a disabled WWII vet, but he manged to keep the family farm going with his disability. And my mother would have had a terrible time paying the taxes on the farm without social security. But I'll tell you wht the real problem is, single mothers. I don't blame them as much as the irresponsible clowns that refuse to live up to their responsibilities as fathers. What really pisses me off is motehr shaving more babies jsut to get more welfare. Who wants to be on welfare? Leeches, that's who.
