Which is the best goaltending tandem in the league right now?
Wes Goldstein
Tandems are the new black, it seems, for more than a half dozen teams around the league early in the new season. But before you get caught in any trendy new styles, remember that these first few weeks of the schedule represent an experimental stage for several clubs like the Bruins, Canadiens, Kings and Flyers still trying to figure out who should be No. 1 for them. It may take awhile in those places, but in the meantime, two Pacific Division powerhouses, the Ducks and Sharks are making good use of the two-goalie system. In Anaheim, J.S. Giguere and Ilya Bryzgalov have been the story behind the Ducks' 3-0 start, while in San Jose, the duo of Evgeni Nabokov and Vesa Toskala has helped the Sharks to the same start. But my pick here comes from the East, where Ryan Miller and Martin Biron proved to be the league's best 1-2 punch last season and have picked up where they left off this time around. "
I think having two good goalies is a great idea. I am for Biron staying here. I mean there is no advantage to getting rid of him, yeah its a 2 mill contract but I'd like any of those who think Biron should leave to name one backup we could sign that would be even close to as good as Biron. He is the best backup in the league, and you wouldnt be able to find one better. Grant it 2 mill is alot for a backup, but comparably its not that bad. 3.5mill this year for the overall best goaltending in the league is great. There are few who i think could do as well as Marty did when Miller was injured, maybe Telnqvuist ad a few others. Marty is as well a great coach for Miller, although miller may have more skill/potential, Biron has got the 10 yrs of experience, so together its a great system. Biron may have not had the best season before 05-06 but he filled in and got it done, got us too a winning record, and then when Miller came back he was 5 times better than before he was injured, so it worked out. Miller deserves the starting job, and Marty takes backup, thats totally agreeable with, but you must admit neither would be where they are today, this season, without the other. So why break up a great duo when it gives us soo much success.
All I know is that when/if Marty is traded in the next year to few years, fans should not be upset when Miller is injured, or leaves after his contract up, and we are down from two good goalies to none and are left with some rookie who might be cheap, but will severly hurt the franchise.
