I play vanilla, and started playing the http://www.pointofexistence.com mod a lot. If you haven't tried it, completely free, very professionally (bug free) done, and some cool twists added from the vanilla. About 10 new maps in all.

Since I am new and I suck I wouldn't mind starting out as a medic or support guy (SAW) for the squad. Everyone needs one and not all can be assault.

Engineer would be cool too. If you (MPW), Pigpen, and I jump a blackhawk then you have a pilot and two mini-gunners. Then when the rig gets shot up you can land and I can fix it. But you two would have to be assault to cover my ass while I crank the wrench.

That way we get more flying time. Unless we are SAM'ed.

It's a combat game. Basically you communicate with your teammates with a cheap headset ($20 at CompUsa) and play other teams on a server. Generally one shot one kill. So it is real lifelike. Big game though. 3GB space needed.

But the most intense game I have ever played. Ages 15-60 I have seen on the servers.

Coastal. Ever read the book "Manhunter"? Well, you are the hunted, and the hunter. It's not a computer though. It is real people around the world trying to kill you. Unless you are crafty and kill them first. Stick with this squad. We'll watch each other's backs. Plus it'll be cool talking to other Rangers live on the internet while calling out the game situation.

Here is a taste of what we are trying to assemble. BSmith could be flying the Blackhawk. Pigpen and MPW are on the miniguns and the rest of us are hanging out the door. We are all talking to each other over our headsets. I see a light vehicle on the ground. I yell, "MPW, your 6" (your 6 o'clock). You watch the response to your message as he moves the minigun down and left and BLAM!!! Vehicle shredded.

Ya need to tweak your controller settings and try some different ratios. I use a MS Sidewinder flight stick and i had to knock the ratio's down a bit. i'll post what i'm using in a bit. Dragon Valley is a great "training" map to play when tweaking chopper skills.

Since your stuff is definately different it might be way off, but, I have found, depending on your machine, nice controllers have a tendancy to be ultra sensitive. Once I tweaked to these settings i've found flying choppers much easier (i.e. less crashes) but still tough to hover over flags (i like to get the F out when i have to). Planes are evil. some folks are flat out viscous with 'em. I suck in planes. On the ground is where i'm found! Hope this helps.

It is a buggy beast and you need a fairly good rig to play it but it is a helluva lot of fun. The single player mode is nearly worthless and only serves to teach you the keyboard moves.

Once you log into one of the servers the real fun begins. No game is the same and on some servers you dominate, others you get obliterated. Teamwork really pays off and the action is pretty intense. I think the cost is down to $25 or so and it is well worth it. BF2142 is now out but I haven't played it yet.

Not sure as I haven't played ET. Besides the decent vid card and a strong CPU I recommend you have 2GB of RAM. BF2 loves RAM. You can play with 1GB but you'll see the FPS drop to 10 or 20. 2GB of RAM doesn't improve the top end performance but eliminates the FPS drops.

Yep that is the case here but even with a good vid card you stll see FPS drops with 1GB of RAM. Toms Hardware did a thing on it awhile back. Investigation on whether 2 GB of RAM was really necessary for gaming. I'll try and find a link for you.

Here is the link. The comparison had 512MB vs 2GB and I thought it was 1Gb vs 2Gb so takje it for what it is worth . Like I said, you don't need 2GB but it helps. My rig will utilze 1.6GB of RAM whie playing BF2 (figure 380MB for background stuff include inthat 1.6GB total).

I bought this game, a Logitech Joystick, and a Logitech Internet chat set (a MUST HAVE!!) for a buddy Carlos at work last week. Middle 30's guy. Good guy. He was really appreciative but didn't feel good about me getting this stuff when "he might have a chance to play once in a great while".

I told him to install it and check it out. That was last Friday. Monday I show up at work and an EXTREMELY expensive bottle of 12 year old scotch is sitting on the desk of my office.

Saturday night he was up until 4 in the morning playing the game. Now he is recruiting friends for the server. He's hooked. Says it is the best damn game that he has ever played.

I recruited him to the server because all his friends are Dolphin fans. (He's a fin season ticket holder). I thought that would be a scream!!!! Us, the Range, playing on team USMC against him and his Fin buddies as the Chinese.

Hell, even everyone in Hardcore will want to know who won the last one. Talk about an recruitment tool also!

Plus you get to shoot a dolphin fan in the head! :rofl:

Here's an idea for playing online together while Petes server is down:
I'll be getting online tonite around 9pm ish (sooner if I can get dinner chores out of the way) I'll find a lightly populated server and you guys just join in. Here's how:
Go to my stats page. Under my character image it'll tell you where i'm playing, click that and write down the IP address on a scrp of paper. Load up BF2, click Multiplayer, and click on Connect to IP after all the servers load. type in the IP and your golden. I use that when I see one of my buddies from work on there. Works pretty well as long as the server isn't majorly populated.

Hopped on the server last night Pete but no one was there. Hopped on another and had one of those games where everything just works out. 81 points, 27 kills to 7 deaths, top guy. Woot. I nailed this one squad of four guys 3 or 4 times in APC and tank. Sent a chopper after me and I nailed that SOB for two more kills (he already had a few small hits on him but the 120mm in the face finished it). Pop over a hill and there are three guys to chew up. Back up (never sit still in a tank when capping a flag) and crush a SF guy you didn't even know was there. Just one of those golden days in BF2.

A little advice. The best thing to do in the cities is to walk very slowly in the middle of the streets. Come to a complete stop and do a full 360 for at least 3 seconds. Nevermind the rooftops, the mark is usually hiding in alleyways and snipers never show up in the cities. But slow walking in the street is very quiet and you'll soon see that you can actually hear footsteps. Good advice for a complete beginner.

getting a plane in a game takes practice, but once you have one everytime you die you spawn right next to it. find an empty server and practice on there..it wont mess up your stats.

I'm getting a lot better at it.

I set the joystick to be real sensitive. For me the hardest part of flying a chopper was learning to hover. Once I got that down then I got better. But when I lose a good aspect in the chopper I sometimes lose the ability to recover. Gotta work on that.


I fly a jet like a maniac though! Getting real good at it. Dogfighting is another matter. Gotta learn the "tactics".

With a private stripe you'll still be called a nooob. Hell, MacRazor was messing with me hardcore last night practicing in the private server. Everytime I came after him he dropped me like a sack of potatos.

And I used to play Call of Duty 2. But this is better. But then again I always played the bots. Humans can be tricky. :D

Cant find 1.3 anywhere so now d'ling full 1.4.

OMG. Funny you mentioned that. I dropped the cannon for tricky air-to-air only and personell, and picked up the TV.

Blasted 3 of 4 vehicles at the Nuke Plant. Didn't even run out of missles. And I had a lousy pilot too.

The trick I learned. Patience. Lotsa patience. Keep your eye on the ball, fire, and don't let go until you see the blast in the camera. Let the pilot worry about what is around us. Medium shots are best. Too close and no room to steer. Too far and a slight adjustment makes you miss. But at 200 meters that's the sweet spot. Enough time to make a slight adjustment but not enough for him to maneuver.

2 more and I think I get a badge.

OK, EA support officially sucks balls! Still no mic yet but I'm working around it for now (meaning I just might go buy another headset).

Strike at Karkland and Sharqi Penn. are my favorites. S@K is murder if your a blatant noob amongst vets. SP is flat out insane at times. Might go on later or after the sabres game.

98FreakGTP is a bud of mine, he's pretty damn good too. He's still figuring out xfire though like some of us.

Squad suggestion: learn how to swap kits, it's a good thing to do after ya waste a medic or a support guy. You can toss medkits or ammo packs depending on your needs. Plus you can help a buddy out if he's a medic and gets greased. Grab his kit and defib him back to life. the "G" key is my friend! BTW, if you take an enemy's medkit, be sure to say "Thanks"!

Another tip: Squad leaders, if ya get smoked, leave the squad then rejoin, you'll be able to respawn on the new SL. Keeps things moving forward.

When I escape out to the main menu, my games crashes to the desktop. Also, when I hit tab to check out stats, all the players names are black boxes.

This is driving me friggin crazy. I really can't play this shit anymore. I tried reloading my video drivers, reinstalled the game and this is still happening.

what kind of video card? Definitely sounds like a driver issue. First thing to try is to go to the manufacturers website (nvidia or ati) and download the latest drivers. If you are having problems with the newest drivers, sometimes you have to go backwards. For example, i have a 6800gt and was running BF2 perfect on the 77.77 drivers. I updated to a newer set and started having all kinds of problems (the biggest being crashes.) So i went back to the 77.77's and never touched them since.

yeah, bf2 doesn't have any widesceen support, so it will just stretch it. Most people still do it though. Supposedly it distorts it less by setting the custom res than just streching a 4:3 res to fill the screen.

It is awesome. Due to build issues I ended up watercooling the GPU and had the thing up from 500/1.35 to 675/1.9 10,775 in 3DMark06. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v250/andlopes/Emoticons/yippee.gif

Incredible card but I am sure DX10 will take it down a notch or two. Overclocking an Intel chip is all new to me but I got this $179 CPU up from 1.8GHz to 3.2Ghz, so not bad. Here is the evolution of my new rig mates. I'm pretty proud of it and 90% of the stuff was used. My old components paid for most of it so this build ended up costing about $400.
