View Full Version : Why wasn't celsius design used for the Jerseys?

It was a concensus among pretty much anyone I spoke to that saw the website that any of the Jerseys shown would have been great. The site had been around for years so it isn't like the people in charge of this decision didn't know about it. Does Quinn have a young child or something? Did he let that child come up with the new jerseys?
I get the fact that they are just jerseys and they won't in any way affect my love or loyalty to the team like some of these guys are crying it will but why go so far off the board for these? It is just something else that can be used to rip on the team in the national media, and I really do think they are horrendous. I think it just boils down to my hatred for incompetance. Why did they not listen to the people?
On a side note does anyone remember if there was an outcry when the Black and Reds were unvailed? I was away in college and I just don't remember there being one.

i do feel that they are trying to cash in on last years success. Would have they have changed the jerseys if the team finised 11th?

I agree, I hate the uniforms, and I understand that this has been discussed 1000 times.
But if they changed that logo, it would make the uni's so much better.

Yes they said many times since Golisano took over the team that they were going back to the blue & gold.

I am not a huge fan of the celsius designs. That gold ring logo is just aweful. That being said, those designs are way better than that piece of crap that is now residing on their jerseys. I don't know what Larry Quinns problem is, but he must have an ego bigger than just about anyone. He must have thought of stupid ideas to put on a jersey to be innovative (numbers on the front of the jersey) and absolutely blew it. I think the jersey designs/colors are good/OK, but that logo is just aweful. There is no way that there is anyone in that organization outside of Quinn that looked at that logo and said they love it. I cannot believe Tom Gallisano looked at that thing and said it was great, no way.

You can't get kickbacks from someone's ridiculously overpaid marketing & design department by using stuff from the public domain, even if it's vastly and obviously superior. I wouldn't be suprised if Tommy ponied up $1M for some bunch of tools to come up with that slug.

This guy basically disses Celsius, "It was easier to start from scratch," said Frank Cravotta, Sabres director of creative services. "When your old logo is such an icon, it's hard to redo it."
And the most mind-boggling thing about this logo, "Cravotta said the Sabres evaluated about 80 logo designs before settling on one. Then there were about 12 revisions before it was finalized. "

Unbelievable!!!
For those who don't know me personally(which is probably all of you) I am one of the most positive people out there. I normally couldn't be bothered by something like this but it is almost like Quinn is saying who cares these idiots will buy anything. That is what really bothers me.

Here's what they did:
Instead of listening to the fans, and realizing that Buffalo is an old school town that is deep in tradition, they hired a design team from out of town that probably worked with a marketing firm from out of town, that come up with a "new trendy jersey that people will buy".
Problem is, besides Buffalo people, (here in WNY, or transplants) few outsiders will ever buy an NHL Buffalo Sabres jersey.
So why make this horrible jersey made by a marketing firm that has numbers on the front that Quinn himself said "tested well"? Why not realize who your buyers are, and understand that they love the old school uni's.
And Quinn seemed to be the one who's in touch with the fans love for the nostalgia. With the classic photo's around the arena and the Poor Man's Aud Club in the new arena, it seemed like he understood.
Mark my words, in three years, the uni's will be changed, either the logo or the whole thing..

Remember those Islander Jerseys in the mid 90s. Those didn't last long.

If you run every decision you make through a series of polls before deciding on anything, you end up being a Clinton.

Well, the best uni's in the league are all the teams that have had the same type uni's for some time. Toronto, Chicago, Boston, Montreal, Detroit, Boston, NYR, Edmonton, Calgary.
And the worst: Nashville, Anaheim's new model, Buffalo
Just like college football: Penn St. Ohio St, ND, Michigan, USC, have great uni's. Then look at Oregon, who listen to Nike, and their awful uni's..

Totally agree, people like simple and classy. look at the bills uni's. I don't know any Bills fan that dosen't like the throwback jerseys the best. those should be our #1 jerseys.

I love those Bills throwbacks. I'll bet they become the main uniform next season or soon thereafter.
Simpler is better in a logo, it's more recognizable. I didn't like the goat head either. You couldn't really make it out from a distance, like the new logo. The Leafs, RedWings, etc.. have a nice simple logo that you can recognize a mile away, like the Sabres original.

I like how people act like they won't sell these.
They sold out in 10 ****ing minutes. 10 minutes. They have order lists hundreds of people long for personalized jerseys.
You suckers bought into the blue and gold garbage and they reeled you in.

Bingo. What's that saying? "Be careful what you wish for"?
You guys wanted it. You got it. And don't start this "we asked for the original logo". No you didn't. All I ever heard from anybody was "bring back the blue and gold", not really anything about the logo. And when Larry Quinn announced that the Sabres would be going back to blue and gold but with a different logo, not the Celsius Designs (which aren't that great, they are so disproportional it's laughable) everyone was cool with it. Granted, I don't like the current logo either, but still, all the blue and gold advocates got what they wanted. Now sit in it.

Agree 100% on the Bills throwback. And the Bills need to get rid of the current white, and go to the all white throwbacks with the black shoes, and the standing Buffalo helmet.

Just because they sell them, doesn't mean they're not horrible. Fans will buy uni's almost no matter what. But that doesn't give the Sabres the right to come out with the worst uni's in the league..

Although the new merch sold out in 10 mins last Saturday, if the logo/unis are deemed ugly (which is the case for most Sabres fans) the sales will drop off. The initial rush for new merch is expected. Most people want the newest or latest thing but over the long term the Sabres could lose money or fail to generate revenue from the new merchandise. If people really oppose it, do not buy the new jersey. Dust off your old vintage jersey or continue to wear the goat head until the next uniform change. I could see a situation where the Sabres will make the new logo our "alternative" jersey in a couple of years...or at least we can hope.
That said, go Sabres.

What is this, communist Russia? The fans don't have to just "sit" or deal with whatever is offered to them. That's like saying that fans can't complain about the team when it doesn't perform well.
The Sabres are our entertainment. They are in the entertainment buisness. They're supposed to be entertaining and appealing in order to be a successful buisness. In order to do that, they must make the fans happy and try to keep them that way.
Charlie Sheen is a terrible actor. Are people required to buy tickets to his movie? No, but people still buy tickets to see his movies. Just like people will go out and buy the new Sabres merchandise. If there aren't enough people buying it, then obviously something is wrong. Charlie Sheen doesn't come out in movies very often anymore. Only time will tell how merch sales with the Sabres new logo goes.
The fans had trust that this new regime had their finger on the pulse of the community. In every aspect of the organization, the new regime has been flawless.........Until this new logo. A lot of people don't like it. It could not have been the best option they had to choose from. But only time will tell if it proves to be a mistake.
Don't ever think that the fans have to just be content with anything about whatever organization and team they root for.
