Several sources both on and off campus tell The Buffalo News that a long-running feud with racial overtones between the basketball squad and the school's baseball team is at the core of a dispute. The situation erupted last month with the arrests of the basketball players after some of them allegedly beat a pitcher from the baseball team.

Basketball players Charron Fisher and Stanley Hodge are facing an Oct. 17 pretrial hearing on assault charges for allegedly beating NU baseball player Jeffrey St. Denis outside a Main Street bar in Niagara Falls in the early morning hours of Aug. 31. Three other basketball players present during the incident - Lorenzo Miles, Kamau Gordon and Javonte Clanton - were charged with disorderly conduct after a confrontation with police, and have an Oct. 10 hearing.

There are several reasons for the baseball/basketball feud but sources tell The News the biggest one involves disagreements over interracial dating, primarily African-American basketball players dating white women. Police reports indicate several women were on the scene of the Fisher/Hodge/St. Denis scrap, and the basketball players were reportedly upset that a former girlfriend of one of them was with St. Denis as he exited the bar.

This sucks. Coach Mihalich is a great guy and a great coach...too bad his players are letting him down.
