OTTAWA — Calling Canada a potential conduit for bioterrorism, pests and disease, the U.S. government is boosting its northern border inspection muscle -- and making Canadian air travellers and commercial shippers foot the bill.

In what it calls an "emergency action," the United States Department of Agriculture has served notice it will levy a per-trip surcharge on all air travellers and commercial cargo shippers from Canada, starting Nov. 24.

The U.S. entry fee will range from $5 (U.S.) per air passenger to $488 per maritime vessel, with trucks paying $5.25 per crossing and railways $7.50 per car.

The estimated $77-million raised annually will fund a much-expanded agriculture inspector program to screen air travellers and commercial rail, truck, water and plane shipments for pests and biohazards.

Actually I kinda agree with tightening the boarder, its just that we are tightening the security on the wrong boarder. We need to first take care of Mexico and then we can worry about Canada. There are not millions of Canadians sneaking illegally across the frontier and being a burden on our infrastructure. There are not radical, well not that radical, canadians who want to reconquer the Northwest or the Northeast. The Canadian Army has not raided across the US Boarder. We do need something done about boarder security but this is the wrong frontier.

Sorry spike but alot are not carefully screened,that is the problem and yes your parents and other worked shoulder to shoulder to build this great country and also lived together in the same nieghbour hoods, I grew up with italian, french, polish, african canadians and many more ,but now since trudeau multi culture mistake ,it seems everybody lives in the own little enclave and nobody seems to get together anymore. My ancesters are irish and they did not have it any easier.Yesterday immigrants came here to build a great country now it seems everybody is coming to take advantage of this great country.
