supremely unfunny except for: The word "martyr" is just a fancy name for "crappy fighter".... which is mildly amusing.

He was also a power hungry megalomaniac who was the blueprint for all future dictators interested in social engineering. See Hitler, Mussolini, Lenin, Stalin, and the argument could be made for Bush II. He also tried to get an athiestic cult of personality established about him. Even if you do not believe the claims of Christ, this is not the issue here, keep in mind lots of folks in the first century in Israel were claiming to be messianic or Godlike. Robespierre was the first modern person to have a cult of personality. He was quite psychotic. However, to his credit his policies such as the Levee en Masse did pave the way for Napoleon to conquer much of Europe. Also, prior to the Reign of Terror many of the ruling and learned classes in Europe and the early USA praised the French Revolution. His reign of terror ended this. I would argue that he and not Napoleon betrayed the high ideas of the French Revolution. Especially considering that Napoleon spread the ideas of Egalite, Fraternitie, and Liberte across Europe and ultimately inspired the Democratic fervor that swept across Europe in the 19th century.

Nehemiah, I don't think there are any inaccuracies in Gibby's post.
An apology to him is order, I would think

Wasn't he executed for executing too many people (i.e. anyone he thought should die or threatened his power)?

no cites. no logic. no nothing.
not to mention he praises napolean for the things he criticizes robespierre for.
as a historian, gibby must be held to a higher standard. he fails, in this instance, to live up to that standard.

He wasn't proving anything, IMO.
Much of what he posted was subjective, some of what he said was factual. And his conclusion was, obviously, hypothetical.
Still, none of it was out-and-out inaccurate.

You are right, I should be held to a higher standard than you. So here are some sources.
As usual you can start with the wikipedia (not the best, but generally a good starting point) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximilien_Robespierre
Here is Robespierre's cult and it isn't difficult to fathom that he fashioned the god figure in this religion on himself. It was indeed an athiestic religion.
http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/robespierre-supreme.html
Proof in the pudding, in this you will find how he justifies ending a democratic government or any fashion of government established on Egalite, Fraternite, Liberte. http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/robespierre-terror.html
More will be given as I find it. So you want sources okay. As for fact, well that is open to interpretation now isn't it.
