Thousands of delegates from more than 132 countries gathered in Toronto on Sunday for the start of the 16th International AIDS Conference, a biannual bid to defeat a disease that infects 38.6 million people worldwide.
Roughly 20,000 participants — including scientists, health-care providers, political leaders, government and non-governmental officials, media and people living with HIV-AIDS — were expected to attend the conference, which runs Aug. 13-18.
It began Sunday morning with a march through the streets that included blues singer Alicia Keys, Stephen Lewis, the UN secretary general's special envoy on AIDS in Africa, and 100 grandmothers from 13 African countries, who were all forced to raise their grandchildren after their children died of AIDS.
The women, who have been at the forefront of many projects to help the estimated 13 million AIDS orphans in sub-Saharan Africa, sang as they strode toward the CBC Broadcast Centre and then gathered in the atrium to sing We Shall Overcome.
Lewis, a Canadian AIDS activist and former leader of Ontario's New Democratic Party, urged industrialized countries to deliver the millions in funding and aid that they have pledged to help combat HIV-AIDS.
"What the Western world has to do is deliver on its promises, which it never does. It always betrays the people of Africa," Lewis told CBC News.
With the international AIDS conference in Toronto now in full swing we should spend some time discussing the current status of the AIDS crisis.
I'm curious to know your opinions on this quote:
"AIDS should be treated as a moral problem, not just a virus."

Ned: Nah. Our sources say that 35Pete is about to arrive and question the logic of this.
Wolf: OK. Now time for a commerical break. Right back after a word from our greedy anti-worker corporate sponsers.

Jimmi. Let me first innoculate myself against slander by stating that I am in 100% support of gay rights. That being said let me ask you this:
Cancer and heart disease individually account for WAY more deaths than AIDS.
Why is AIDS more important? Should we not get the most bang for the buck with our public health dollars?
Me thinks it has nothing to do with the practical and everything to do with politics.

HIV is not a sole problem of gay people by far - it certainly ain't in Africa.
Cancer is a serious problem and should receive its fair share of funding, I agree.
Cancer can hit everyone, but in many cases it's a byproduct of old age. Not so with HIV. Especially in Africa, children are born with HIV because their infected mothers can't afford the medication to protect them from the disease. AIDS kills a significant amount of the parent generation, leaving thousands of orphaned children behind.
In 1st world countries, cancer might be as problemartic as AIDS, but for 3rd and 2nd world countries, AIDS is by far the larger problem.

AIDs is a moral problem because it is 100% preventable. That such a horrid disease continues to spread in millions despite being 100% preventable is a reflection of a failed morality of global proportions.
Its also disappointing to see the idea of AIDs being a gay disease still persists.

His OS sucks but on this he makes important points
Gates criticises HIV abstinence policies
Bill and Melinda Gates have come off the political fence and publicly backed key causes of Aids campaigners, criticising the abstinence policies beloved of the US government and calling for more rights for women and help for sex workers.
Making the keynote speech of the opening session of the 16th International Aids Conference in Toronto, on Sunday, the Microsoft billionaire and his wife, who have previously largely confined themselves to discussing and funding non-political scientific research, spoke with passion and commitment about the social changes necessary to stop the spread of HIV/Aids.
...
"Abstinence is often not an option for poor women and girls, who have no choice but to marry at an early age. Being faithful will not protect a woman whose partner is not faithful. And using condoms is not a decision that a woman can make by herself; it depends on a man.
"We need to put the power to prevent HIV in the hands of women. This is true whether the woman is a faithful married mother of small children or a sex worker trying to scrape out a living in a slum. No matter where she lives or what she does, a woman should never need her partner's permission to save her own life."

My Friends and I participated in an Aids Walk in NYC 1996. We all witnessed Victims of this disease speak there part.
That was the most tearful words I have ever seen live.
The one that really caught my attention was:
A young mother met a guy in a bar, they danced, talked and had drinks.
They went to a hotel.
what the guy should have told her before they had sex. Well I have Aids.
The young mother said How do I tell my d daughter that I have Aids. How do I tell my Daughter that she also has Aids.

HIV-positive, not AIDS. AIDS is a syndrome, HIV is a virus. A HIV infection usually leads to AIDS, but not neccessarily.

Did you guys not hear the news, the meeting was a complete failure. I am amazed you did not know that. And the reason that it was a failure is because PM Harper did not show up. And the leftist media has made a stink about it, who cares about how many others showed up or about the event it self, no lets make a BIG deal out of harper not showing up.The president of liberia did not show up,why, becasue harper was not going and she felt that if he was not there to greet her then she would not go.So she is from africa and her people are dying from aids ,but I will not go because of the evil harper. What a crock of shit.

All this is ,is a big photo-op for the bills. Did clinton do this for free or is he getting his 250,000 for it. Can some one tell me what was accomplished there, but say the abstinence does not work. It is another leftist industry being built here, just like the poverty and homeless industries the left has formed, in other words we will create jobs for ourselves but nothing is ever going to happen. And hiow are you going to stop it in the sub sahara where them nmen have dominated women for 1000's of years and will not do anything to help themselves.

HIs point was that AIDS is a sympton of an immoral world, to cure AIDS you must attack immorality.
So, yeah the same old shitty abstinence stuff.

The HIV/AIDS conference is the largest gathering of active scientists engaged in HIV/AIDS related research.

The HIV/AIDS conference is the largest gathering of active scientists engaged in HIV/AIDS related research. Then tell me what was accomplished ,besides alot of talk and back patting? And tell me about how the ''89'' and ''95'' conference helped? All I am reading up here is how evil harper is for not showing up. So while you are at it ,tell me how harper showing up was going to help anybody, like you have the 2 bills ,the minister of health and the GG there. IMO The only reason they wanted harper there was to set him up for some major booing and criticism. Stuff like that make the left feel good about themselves. All they want is more money thrown at it.

wtf?
I doubt gay sex is even 1/20th of the reason HIV is so pervasive in Africa.
Some people would rather spread their agenda over taking care of problems. There is a time and place for everything and this certainly is not appropriate. That makes me ill.

South Africa, where gays have many rights and are relatively accepted, has a huge AIDS problem. Lack of (sex) education is the biggest problem.
