As dissapointing as it is now to have to part with players because of last years success, I guess there are worse problems to have. Some teams out there (St. Louis, Toronto) have such a dirth of talent that they have to overpay for players on the free agent market because of the lack of internal talent. I believe this is a credit to our scouting system as well as several shrewd moves by Regier/Muckler in the past. Looking back a few years now, the trades of Chris "the next Lindros" Gratton and Michal "I am superman in the playoffs" Grosek for Briere and Dumont, respectively, look pretty good right now. This is without even mentioning the fact that Gilmour was also included in the Grosek deal. The sabres also have a way of sustaining talent, i.e. trading players approaching the end of their prime for young guns. An example of this is turning over Mogilny into Peca into Connolly. This is the way a small market team survives, and if it means saying goodbye to Dumont, or maybe even Briere, so be it.

Just to pick up on one of your points, I think the league will find itself in trouble soon because of those teams that have little talent. Teams like Chicago are so desperate for a player that they will throw them a huge deal (Havlat) in order to get that player to be on their team. This will drive salaries up. I have to believe that there are just to many teams in the league.

It seems throughout the Sabres active trading history that very few have an immediate impact on today's squad. Sure, there were some wonderful moments... Ruuttu for Hasek (through Beauregard), JP Dumont for Carney (though Muni and Grosek), McMahon for Van Boxmeer (through Shack and Rene Robert), even Geoff Sanderson from Tracy Pratt (though Jerry Korab, Phil Housley, Dale Hawerchuk and Brad May.)

Now bear with me... what strikes me as fascinating are three trades made in the 1980s that still have an impact on the 2006-07 team. First and foremost... Rick Martin is still the gift that keeps giving! Back on March 10, 1980 he was traded for a 1983 1st round pick that ended up being Tom Barrasso who was later traded for Bodger who we traded for Vavada, then Klepis and ultimately Griere. Now sure, Griere's gone... however, part of the Barrasso trade also involved getting Darrin Shannon who we ultimately traded for Dave McLlwain and a draft pick that ended up being Yuri Khymlev who we traded for a pick that ended up being Max Afinogenov. But that's not all. We ended up trading McLlwain for LaFontaine who was let go for a pick that ended up being Andrew Peters.

The 2nd trade was on June 09, 1982 when we traded Don Edwards and Richie Dunn for Paul Cyr, Lacombe and Tucker. Paul Cyr was shipped for Mike Donnelly and a pick that ended up being Alex Mogilny. As everyone knows, he was shipped for Mike Wilson, a pick that ended up being Jay McKee and of course, Mike Peca. From Peca, the Sabres got Pyatt and Tim Connolly. Not so bad a deal there.

The last set of trades is I think the best... it happend on March 06, 1989 when the Sabres traded Calle Johansson for Grant Ledyard, Clint Malarchuk and a pick that ended up being Brian Holzinger. Holzinger was dealt to Tampa for Chris Gratton and a pick that ended up being Derek Roy. Of course, everyone knows who we got for Gratton... Danny Briere!

So thank you Rick Martin, Don Edwards and Calle Johansson and one should never knock trading for draft picks. Go Sabres

Nicely done, while I was aware of the effect of the Rick Martin trade I didn't know about the others.

Regier's trading past isn't perfect, he has made some good deals though, I will admit. however, he has also made worse moves, and he could look and had better options. This year he should have done something at the trade deadline. Whether or not they were the best or not the best defenseman, he should have done something.

Yeah....sure was a bad trade. A concussion prone wash up in favor of a tough as nails kid who can protect your star players......your right, what a bad deal. What were we thinking? Someone go assassinate Regier now!! Quick! Before I lose anymore sleep!

I think everyone will give it all away for one cup, which is what I felt we had last year, Regier gave us that chance, twice, though Dallas was in fact the better team in 99-Carolina wasn't this year, that's what makes this years harder to take for me, but as for GM he has done well, this team should've made the playoffs in 03-04, but a couple of bad goaltending performances, we didn't make it, but member that streak we had 27 goals in 4 games or something like that? What a streak

Up until this year I hated the Peca trade, I thought we would've made it to the cup in 2000-01 if we had him, Connolly and Pyatt were TERRIBLE until this year, but if Connolly's here for 3 more years the way he was this year, was worth it.
