View Full Version : For those that think trading Briere is the right move...

Why?

The main argument is "better to get something for him than having him one year and letting him walk". I say that's crap. This team is in very good position to win the Cup next year. Losing Danny Briere probably changes that for the worse. The way I look at it is this: if the Sabres win the Cup next year, which they very well could, that supposed prospect that the Sabres could have got for Briere looks almost irrelevant. Sure, Danny might be gone, but you also have a Stanley Cup. Why lessen your chances of winning a championship now when you don't have to? The best move for the Sabres is to go for broke now, and worry about what Briere does as a UFA later. Don't throw away, or at least seriously hinder your chances at being a legitimate cp contender.

yeah its a valid point, and just say the Sabres tank a bit or hit by the injury bug you could always trade him at the deadline. Somebody desperate to win the cup might throw some good things at Darcy to get Briere.

That is a very easy and simple answer: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I don't really think anyone wants to trade Briere, but rather that the belief that the team just cannot afford that kind of salary. If the Sabres believe they can win the cup this year, and I have to assume they do, they will pay the cap and next year be prepared to lose their two best forwards to free agency and move on from there.

its a valid point but now we are close to the cap, still have some signings to go, and how much our owner wants to spend

The thing is, even in order to trade Briere, you have to pick up his option anyway. He is going to count against your cap at some point. The only way he won't is if you let him walk, and that can't happen either. Taking on his salary is inevitable, even if you want to trade him. If you are goinng to pick up the $5 million, I say you might as well keep him.

The beginning of last season, Darcy Regier was asked if it would be a rebuilding year or they would be fighting for the cup. Darcy said we would be fighting for the cup. We came so close that they know its either now or four/five years from now. They are going to go for it!

Tom Golisano has truly given Darcy the tools to finish the job.

maybe true, but in 3/4 years, other than Briere/Drury, who else might be gone that couldn't be replaced? most of our offense will be here, minus one big name and you have miller its still pretty much the same team, thats why our team is promising, the young talent got us there
