With Max signed, shouldnt someone in the Sabres organization make it official that they accepted Briere's arbitration award?

I know they can wait another few days or so, but Im getting a little nervous.

The Sabres are breaking news like crazy, but I have yet to see an official report that the Sabres have accepted Briere's award..

Why?

Yeah, that pretty much explains it. They have until I think the 8th to accept the ruling. Knowing how Darcy Regier operates, he is using all the time he has to weigh his options.

Like it's already been said, Regier will take all the time he can.

OK. I was just trying to say they still have a little while to accept the offer. Regier will use all the time he has to do it.

Just because he wants to?? I think there is more than just that. I mean there is no point to wait if he plans on keeping him.

There has to be a reason.

He's had 11 players to deal with in arbitration, and thenMiller,Kalinan and some others, he's been getting all that done, seeing how his salary pans out, trying to figure out what player(s) to move, we'll find out pretty soon after Mair gets to abitration, if he does

I can imagine if Darcy has until midnight on the 6th, the answer will come around 11:59:59.

And then his fax machine will jam and we will lose him w/o as much as a bag of pucks in return.Typical of our damn luck. j/k hopefully......

Darcy has alot of options with Briere now, accept his arbitration and try to re-sign him cheaper in January (wont happen) or deal him now or at the trade deadline. He also may be able to package him with Biron and get a center and a few prospects. With his $5 million salary and Birons $2.1 million its going to be tough especially with Brieres price tag. We will see come next week. I think the Max signing was huge. I think he is going to be a 100 point man this year.

He's keeping the door open for any improved trade offers.

They have 48 hours after Mairs award comes down so the 8th could be correct.

Rieger is working feverishly to sign Briere long term and Tommy G. is getting involved too. They desperately want to keep Briere, my sources tell me they are offering around $18m over 4 years. Briere has to decided if he's to take the $5m and test FA next year and risk injury, or take the long term security at a lower rate. We will know sometime next week.

I doubt the abitration will need extra time on Mairs descion although he was hurt for most of the year he might a deserve a huge raise also!

The Sabres aren't allowed to negotiate, nor can they sign a new contract with Briere, until after January 1, 2007.

Yeah, although we're waiting on Mair to buy time with signing Miller and Kalinin, how do we know the arbitrator won't overpay Mair too? Even $1 million is too much for Mair, and he could get that from them. The most we could do with Briere is accept the $5 million contract and negociate a long term deal in January. Declining Dumont's deal is a risk, but do we really think he'll get $2.9 million from someone else? According to the walk away rights of arbitration, if Dumont gets offered as high as $2.3 million from someone else and accepts it (less than 80% of the arbitration ruling) the Sabres can assume that contract just like he were a RFA. I do think the highest offer he'd get on the open market is around $2.5 million, and we might match that offer to attempt to keep him.
