I would say 3-3.5 per.
BUT, the way the Sabres have structured these deals, I bet he gets in the 2-2.5 mil range year 1 and his contract will increase significantly each year.

This is good news. Could the Sabres possibly want to keep Max instead of Danny? It was a smart move by not letting Max go to Arbitration like Danny did.

This is the sign we have been waiting for.
Tommy G has loosened the purse strings. He wants to win more than make money.
There is no way they would have signed Maxim unless this was true.
This is great, great news.

I dont think thats his thinking. Like any business man, you gotta spend money to make money.
Buffalo is ready to make a run for 5 or more years, he would be stupid to break this team up.
The city is ready to buy up everything to do with the Sabres.

if you plan on dumping Briere, sure, we could afford Max at $3.5mil. which is a total waste, Max should've been dumped sometime after January of last year...

Wow. When I first read this, I thought "So long, Danny......" and I felt bad. I don't know if I can think Briere is going bye-bye just yet....But this makes it seem more likely.
But this can't be a 4 million dollar per year deal. I'm very, very suprised.
I don't think Golisano is just opening up his wallet.....He's a buisness man first. A fan second.
There's a decently sized trade brewing.
It involves 1, 2, or 3 of these players....
Briere
Afinogenov
Dumont
Kalinin

I have to say that I'm impressed; surprised, but impressed. For all the criticism we were pre-empting at Max, it seems he's willing to stick around for 3 years with a team that has a good chance of going further.
Pax.

We have no clue what we can afford.
In the past, yeah we had no choice but to spend at around 30 million, but Tommy G wipes his ass with more money he gave Briere.
Man I hope this guy buys the Bills.
The best part about this is Max's hot tennis girlfriend will be in Buffalo more.

This is great news and last night i posted in another thread that I thought Buffalo would get something done with Max soon and they actually did.
To Yellow Dog you wont be complaining when max puts up some 90 point years. You can not judge this guy on one playoff alone.

from what we've heard so far is that Tom G. isn't expecting to pay out much more than he did last year. this is common knowledge. something has to be up. getting rid of Briere AND failing to bring about a killer logo would surely sink the ship ;)

i believe he fell apart around January of last year. all he could do was take the puck, skate around (dazzlingly, of course) and then either lose the puck or make a lame pass. we've given this guy enough time, he should've have 90 pts/35-40 goals last year. i love him, just like the rest of us, but...

The last I heard Darcy, which was after they sign Connolly, he was asked if they would have to dump players salaries, but he said it was up to ownership.
Normally he gives a #, but this time I got the feeling he is working with the NHL cap instead of the self imposed 30-34 million cap he normally has to work with.

I can't argue against the signing, keeps the team together. If Golisano has given Darcy the thumbs up on spending to the cap limit then great, this team is set for the next 4 or 5 years.
Biron has to be moved at some point because they may be risking hitting the cap.

$3 million a year sounds great for Max, I'll bet it could be backloaded like the other guys we've signed long term. I wouldn't be shocked to see a guy packaged with Marty for something/someone, then we sign a cheap backup. Now Kalinin seems like the guy we'd let go, and again I would hesitate to do that unless we got a solid player in return. Kalinin deserves a chance to rebound off a bad year and I think he'll do that, but it could be in a different city.

When was the last time somebody signed a 3-year deal with a team and was promptly traded by that same team in the NHL???
The answer is never or extremely rarely. If Maxim was going anywhere, this contract would have come from the team he was going to. That's how it works with RFA trades.
He is here to stay. Thumper's list of those who might go is accurate, but only if you take off Afinogenov.

I don't know when the last time that happend. But I'm sure it has. If Regier really signed Max on the cheaper side for this year, with a back loaded contract, you absolutely could see Max dealt. Maybe not this season, but I wouldn't rule anything out. He'd be even more attractive to certain teams, knowing that they'll have him locked up for a pretty good price with a multi-year contract....That would sweeten the deal for any team willing to attempt to trade for him.

So we're at $29,806,000. Including Briere's contract, $34,806,000. That leaves us a shade under $10,000,000 to ink Dumont, Mair, Kalinin, Miller, and Novotny, more once we trade Biron.
I think this is going to work.

One thing I've noticed is the absolute certainty with which some posters KNOW what the Sabres must or mustn't do. And the Darcy comes along and blows 'em all away. Consistantly.
So why bother trying to be so sure about anything relating to Sabres finances?
Let's just let it play out - do I believe JP, Briere and Max will all be here this year? Less than 50/50, but anything can happen (and HAS BEEN!).

Why are you so high on two guys that were not willing to sign 2 or 3 deals to stay here?
Danny got 5
JP 2.9
They are worried about one thing and that is the cash and if we keep either of them I promise you that they will walk next summr. Some team will offer Danny about 5.75 or 6 million a year and JP will be offered 3 or 3.5 from some team. We will not match these offers and there is no way we should as they are not worth that kind of money espec with our budget.
If we trade them for some grit and role guys and picks we will with out a doubt still be a top contender this year but more importantly for the next 3 or 4. We can not put all our eggs into one season.
One of them needs to go now as they will be going next year anyways.
Both have health issues that concern me and I think they are both replaceable.
I know Danny is good, but is it worth paying him 5 million then watch him leave for nothing in return?

Who was the last Sabres player that could contribute more than 1 pt a game, with his regular linemates?
I dont care if Dumont is traded as long as Briere remains. To me, Dumont is more valuable than Kotalik and others. Pay them now and move whoever is not performing up to or better than last season's pace during the season.
Health issues are stronger with Connolly and Afinogenov, both with severe concussions. Hecht worries me with 2 bad knees and seems jinxed with nagging problems.
As far as keeping either Dumont or Briere beyond June '07, its very possible as long as Darcy dumps those under performing during the next season.

yeah, but if you win a cup with danny this year. i think he's the type that would chill for the remainder of his career at 4-4.5/5yrs here. just a hunch and i know whats happening now makes my comment look like absolute crap. but, hey, putting all your eggs in one basket can sometimes yeild some wicked results. what do you think they do in DET, PHILLY, COL, etc. EVERY YEAR? exactly that, they push to the max salary to give themselves a chance at glory. get with the times, this is not a sport, its a crap shoot - played only by the rich and l33t.

No your right if Buffalo could spend the cap we be a great team but we just cant.
Also Max played the whole year last year and was perfectly fine. I thik the Hernia issue is one not to dismiss so lightly.
You speak of getting rid of the "under performers", but who will replace these guys ? If we invest to much into Danny we will not be as deep of a team which is the main thing we have going for us.
