No, it's not what you think. I spent 24 hours with a group of 22 teenagers. It was an event called the 30 Hour Famine. The teens fast for thirty hours starting after their lunch hour at school on Friday. They ate at 11 AM. They come to the church at 6 PM where together with a couple lay people, I had charge of them for the next 24 hours. We went ice skating and bowling. I went to sleep at 2 AM and got up at 7 AM. They didn't have a bite to eat until we ended tonight with pizza at 6 PM. Of course, since I'me with them, I had to fast too. The idea is twofold. First, it lets the teens begin to experience the kind of gnawing hunger that too many children live with their entire lives. Second, we raise money through sponsors to help feed some of those same children. It was a great experience, but I have to admit, I'm a little tired tonight.
