Font: * * * * ROME -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Thursday that the release of an Israeli soldier captured in Gaza could be “imminent.”

“There are ongoing efforts that lead us to believe in an imminent solution,” Abbas said, speaking through a translator, after a meeting in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi.

They should have thought about that a few weeks ago, but the plan was to get Isreal to do what it did . The terrorists know the left will eat up anything it tells them.

Palestinian leader suggested earlier a deal to free Shalit was in the works

ROME - A Palestinian lawmaker and a spokesman for the Hamas military wing on Thursday denied a report that the release of a captured Israeli soldier in the Gaza Strip could be imminent.

Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida said "from our side there is nothing new." Palestinian lawmaker Saeb Erekat said it was "premature" to say the soldier, Cpl. Gilad Shalit, is about to be released.
