WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The religious right, which helped re-elect
President Bush in 2004 by rallying opposition to abortion and gay marriage, is now facing a pushback from the religious left.

With a faith-based agenda of their own, liberal and progressive clergy from various denominations are lobbying lawmakers, holding rallies and publicizing their positions. They want to end the
Iraq war, ease global warming, combat poverty, raise the minimum wage, revamp immigration laws, and prevent "immoral" cuts in federal social programs........

Abortion and gay marriage make those issues seem like mere inconveniences.

Yes and no. I mean if all we as christians are focusing on is gay marriage bans and abortion then we are missing the mark. See these things are clearly wrong, but a close look and literal interpretation of scripture says give to caeser the things which are his, and to God the things which are His. Jesus and Pauline scriptures call us to take care of the poor and the disadvantaged. I think Christ would say a government which claims to act in the name of Christ without taking care of the poor, the widow, and the orphan [cutting welfare, social security, education, and the like harms all of these] would be having a form of godliness while denying the power thereof. Yes we should discourage gay marriage and outlaw abortion for all things except rape, incest, and the health of the mother and after the first trimester no abortion at all. But we should not think we please Christ with just these two things when we actively fail to answer his call to aid the less fortunate.

Since when the **** does the Constitution allow the American government to "act in the name of Christ"?? ****'s sake.

Also, please to define how cutting federal money for education would hurt anyone...

pell grants, student loans that are subsidized. Public school underwritting. Thats how. I'm just glad that I'm finished with my undergrad and will be a grad assistant if I go for history. Also for law I know of a couple of ways to get around paying. Also as far as the constitution, you are correct but when you have mr. faith based president in office he should be held to his word.
