I'm currently reading Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Friere, The opposite of Fate by Amy Tan and The Color Purple by Alice Walker.
Sue, make sure you read the entire Vampire Chronicles by Rice, excellent series. Also, Servant of the Bones is another good one from Rice.

I never was into much reading when i was younger, but one day i picked up a Dean Koontz book called "Night Chills" at a 1/2 price book store in Dallas. Very good read. Since then i'm hooked.
So far i've read "The Fun House", "Night Chills", "From the Corner of his eye", "Fear Nothing", "The Vision" and "Intensity".
Some of his ideas get a little repetitive, but i still like his storytelling.
Also like Stephen Kings "Skeleton Crew" and Nightmares and Dreamscapes.
One of my fav short stories is "Suffer the little children". Pretty Creepy stuff. lol

I have read several Stephen King books. This is one that I would recommend Gerald's Game. Keeps you in suspense! Not that gory. Let me tell you every page keeps you guessing. ;)
Another Author I am thinking about getting into is James Patterson.

Speaking of the Civil War. I have a good friend who belongs to a Civil War Reanactment group. It is really cool what he does.
