They truly are the national sports hype machine.
Take the Randy Walker death for example. This is just another example of ESPN's choosing what to hype and what to ignore.
A rather successful, relatively young, Big Ten head coach drops dead a few weeks before the season starts, and I've heard more about it from the Daily Oklahoman (OKC) than I have out of National ESPN.
ESPN's "news" coverage is a joke; they're just a hype machine at this point.
We heard more about friggin Barbaro!!!
A goddamn horse that broke his leg during a horse-race back in May, and then ESPN inundated us with constant updats on Barbaro's condition, his rehab, his chances of survival, on and on and on.
Me: "He's a ****ing horse!! Shoot the damn thing or don't, but I don't give a flying shit what happens to a damn horse!"
Now ESPN is virtually ignoring it when a relatively young Head Coach at a Big Ten university(with a wife and childeren) suddenly drops dead -- right before his season starts. Not a peep out of Bristol.
ESPN coverage of the army womans coach death got her, and her family a lot of donations, and mourn from around the country as her story touched people. Why couldn't ESPN do that for Randy???
ESPN's "news" coverage is a total joke, and it's a monopoly.

Not to take anything away from Randy Walker since what happened was tragic and probably could have used a little more air time, but in case you haven't noticed, no one really gives a damn about Northwestern. And I think the lack of coverage kind of proves that.

Guess you haven't heard about OLN....ERRRRRR Versus, have you?
Plus, with Fox Sports Net(which,in all honesty,is more regional in scope than national)also available, the point is moot.

Northwestern Football is more popular than Black Knight womans basketball...

Where-Chicago?
I guaran-damn-TEE you that NW football is VERRRRRRRRRY low on the sports pecking order in the Windy City, even in football season. Da Bears rule the roost...then the White Sox & Cubs,Blackhawks,Wolves,Hounds, and Shamrox(the new hockey and indoor lacrosse teams respectively)follow. MAYBE NW works its way into this equation, but NOWHERE near the top.

Ok..
Does it really matter???
Nobody cares about Army Womans basketball either, yet their coach was covered thourogly by ESPN..
Hopefully some of my friends like Upstart and Coastal back me up in this thread..

Yes. I would say that more people care about a potential triple-crown horse that broke its leg on national TV than a relatively unknown coach outside of college football junkies that was leading a shitty program.
AND the horse is more media-friendly. There's actually a story to it. With the actual break, the surgery, the recovery, etc.
What really can be said about Randy Walker other than he died and he was a coach. That doesn't take much time.
Like I said before, no one really gives a damn about Northwestern's football team. It's big news to you since you're a fan.

She was covered throughly because she was the Pitt men's bball coach's sister.

And the death of Army's women's hoops coach had more of an angle to it than the Walker death does, since her brother coaches Pittsburgh. Even then,it didn't get a mountain of coverage.

Dude, where the hell have you been?.......the day after it happend thats all ESPN did was talk about it.......I watch ESPN all day every day and the 2-3 days after his death was devoted to him.......Life goes on....people die and if we all stop everything and mourn forever about one mans death....well that would be our own dimise in some aspects.

The Northwestern Debate team is tops in the country, 12 time National Champions.
Maybe you should go to Northwestern, NWF, you're already a Master Debator.
Get it? Master Debator.

NWF, I really don't know why people are giving you a hard time on this one. You bring up a good point and just about everybody here has said at one time or another that ESPN has gone to shit.
For me, it was their total lack of coverage of the NHL Playoffs. The NBA was given like half of every show, and baseball/horses/special interest were given the other half, with like 2 minutes of NHL talk, and even THAT they had to go and give Barry Melrose, because the normal team couldn't be bothered with it. Bah.

Why don't they like me????
Because I openly disrespect the Sabres, and they can't take it..

Here's a better reason:
Ever heard the saying "Have a take,don't suck?" Well,you don't(have logical,decently thought-out takes)and you do(suck).
Plus, the evidence from this season backs up the Sabres. More points than the Rangers, went further in the playoffs than the Rangers too. For this season,SCOREBOARD.

so wait, lemme get this, ESPN should go to the Anti Trust commission because they didn't cover Randy Walker's death to your approval? Well hell, CBS should go to Backruptcy court because I don't approve of Jim Nance's hair.
NWF, honestly have you taken a journalism class? probably not. I've worked in EVERY MEDIUM in media. A death unless it's a celeb or a political figure gets a 30 sec mention and that's IT. Just in case you forgot there's other subjects out there other than jerking off and Northwestern.
should I be pissed that I've seen KU football on ESPN once in 10 years? no. because get this, most people don't care. Yes Randy Walker dying is a shame, but also, ESPN has these things called, ESPN.com and ESPN Radio. So didn't you think they covered it there? oh wait, you can't listen while jerking it.
think about it.
