Hey guys, just wondering if any of you hockey guys are watching the world cup at all. It has been a great tourney thus far, Argentina look incredible.
Who are you guys cheering for?

Soccer? How does a hockey fan put up with soccer?
75 to a hundred guys running amok on a field 1/2 a mile long and games that end 0-0.
Woohoo!
I think bowling might have more action.

What?!?! Soccer and hockey are very similar...
They both require patience, they both require an appreciation for physical effort, and an appreciation for scoring chances.....thats what makes goals so rewarding.....
and the emotion and excitment generated by the biggest sporting event in the world....yeah that sucks :puh:

WXP, what happened to the states, they got hammered in that game. so far argentina looks really strong, they just won 6-0. I am cheering for the african teams and i would like to see England do well because i am a massive liverpool fan.

There is no motivation for me to watch the whole game when I can easily watch the highlights on sportcenter
I think the skill and endurance of the players is awesome...but it's just not exciting to watch for americans

Watching ??? Are you kidding me !
Soccer is without a doubt the most over-rated, boring sport there is. People used to tell me that to be a soccer player you must be a real athlete because there is NO timeouts... Well the sure stand around alot and don't run up and down the field all the time. Then there is the "fake" wrestling like injuries...what a joke. What a bunch of wussies !
Besides any sport that on a lower levels allows boys and girls to play together on the same team at the same time against others cannot be a real sport!
I have deceided to spent my time watching something more exciting...the paint drying on my livingroom wall.

They couldn't finish.... they hit a post, and they didn't really have chances..... the game didn't seem that one sided...but the Czechs converted when they got the chance......
I don't have high hopes for tomorrow.....Italy is probably gonna mop the floor with us.....there is a chance that Team USA comes out fired up because they got pounded the last game...but i don't know if thats gonna matter.

the endurance and skill is good but its always one team kicking the ball up the field for like ten minutes only to get it kicked back the other way. If it were like Shaolin soccer, that'd be coool

80% of the players I see go down are just faking injuries. It is absolutely disgraceful and pathetic. I like watching the game of soccer but these prima donnas make me ill. I wish someone would go out there and kick their ass for real because they deserve it.

Soccer is wonderful in the third world where a village can pool their annual income to buy a ball and send all their kids out to a field to get them out of the way so mum and dad can pop out a few more malnourished urchins.
Hey, I got a great idea. The thing that sets humanity above the beasts of the earth is our intellect, opposable thumbs, and ability to use tools. Let's invent a sport that uses none of these and call it 'soccer'.
Yo bduff, I was just up in Toronto and everybody has the flag of some pissant nation with a GDP less than the block I live on hanging off their piece of crap Aries K. Is anyone there actually from Canada?

hockey and soccer are my two favorite sports.
unfortunately I haven't been able to watch alot of the games because I've been at work. I did see England play though. They look extremely soft, I think they are over-rated due to the extremely high media attention they receive in English speaking countries.
As far as diving in Soccer, I hate it too... it is ridiculous. I do like the new rules in hockey but it does make me nervous that there will be alot more diving like there is in soccer.

Of course, the day after I type this, Ghana defeats the Czechs 2-0. Apparently they had to deal with a bunch of injuries, including that 6'7" striker; where have I seen that before? ;)
By the way, this tournament is a huge deal at our school. We had a non-uniform day last week, and all the kids came in with World Cup jerseys. and the games are on the screens in the hallways and the staff room. We have a lot of ethnic diversity here in Vancouver, and it's fun to see.

Here is another reason I hate the World Cup of Soccer. Not only do I hate the sport, but the setup of the tournament has to be the most retarded thing I have seen. I heard this on the radio earlier and found this online:
For the Americans to advance, they must defeat Ghana. In addition, the U.S. team needs one of these scenarios to take place:
1. Italy defeats the Czech Republic.
2. Italy ties the Czech Republic 0-0 or 1-1 AND the United States beats Ghana by at least four goals.
3. Italy ties the Czech Republic 2-2 or with a higher score AND the United States beats Ghana by five or more goals.
4. Italy ties the Czech Republic 2-2 or with a higher score AND the United States beats Ghana by four goals AND the U.S. team scores at least three goals more than the Czechs do in their tie.
5. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is six or more.
6. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is five AND the U.S. team scores at least three goals more than the Italians do in their loss.
7. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is five AND the U.S. team scores exactly two more goals than the Italians do in their loss AND the Americans win a drawing of lots by FIFA.

I'm sorry, but that is the most retarded setup I have ever seen, especially #7. I realize that it is highly improbable that it will come down to it but "drawing of lots"? Are you kidding me?

Seeing as how there's something like 599.3 BILLION people on the planet who are "futbol" fans, there must be something to it. But, being the hockey fan that I am, I can only compare it to MY favorite sport...and it just does not measure up.
Significantly larger playing surface + significantly slower player speed = significantly less excitement.
I think most people's attention spans are too short to really follow hockey. It's 60minutes of chaos, with stuff happening constantly and all over the ice. Sports like soccer, baseball, and football are brief moments of excitement followed by long stretches of nothing.
The only thing soccer has going for it is it's easy to see the ball. That makes it much easier for all those drunken fans to focus on the action when something actually does happen. :)

Yeah the World Cup is set up so stupid. I mean maybe they should somehow make it so when you LOSE a game in regulation or after extra time you get a point. I mean you should get points for losing games, that makes sense right? LOL.
The setup is fine, its work for as long as the World Cup as been around, and its never been a problem. Dont fix it if it isnt broken.

While we're on the topic, what do you Team USA supporters think of that ref from Uruguay? I was going back and forth from the TSN/Sportsnet coverage to the ABC coverage, which was about 5 secs. behind.
(If you're wondering, TSN, Sportsnet, CBC, and CTV have joint coverage of the World Cup in Canada, and they borrow from the British telecasts; watching the games with British commentating is nifty; you guys that have access to TSN and Sportsnet should give it a try.)
Anyways, the British commentator was equally as questioning of the ref's performance (while not as infuriated as the ABC commentators, but that's understandable). Three red cards?
By the way, non-soccer/futbal guys, feel free to ignore this post. ;)
