One of South Philadelphia's biggest names in cheesesteaks is in a bit of a legal pickle for a lunch-line political statement against immigrants who don't speak English.
The city's Commission on Human Relations yesterday filed a discrimination complaint against Geno's Steaks over signs that read: "This is AMERICA ... WHEN ORDERING SPEAK ENGLISH."
Owner Joey Vento has become a mini-celebrity over the issue and has steadfastly refused to pull down the signs despite the growing legal brouhaha. His son, Geno, said his father would not comment on the matter to The Inquirer.
Reached at his home yesterday evening, the Rev. James S. Allen Sr., commission chairman, said it was incumbent on the commission to get the sign removed.
"We think it is discriminatory, and we are concerned about the image of Philadelphia," he said.
According to the complaint, which was served on Geno's yesterday afternoon, the restaurant is in violation of two sections of the city's antidiscrimination laws: denying service to someone because of his or her national origin, and having printed material making certain groups of people feel their patronage is unwelcome.

How long has the sign been up? Six Months? My idea is change it to "...Speak Amerkcun!" That is vague and only hints at discrimination. It's also funnier and would boost business over Pat's.

i don't really have a problem with the sign....its his restaurant and can take orders in any language he wants

Please Try. If that was on the sign would there be a problem? Also ifa customer can read it... He can speak it. If not... the sign does not exsist to him and serves as an inside joke to the coounter person and the folks in line behind.

I just don't see the problem with a stupid sign.... from my understanding you can serve, or not serve anyone you want at a restaurant....Maybe the guy is being a jerk, but he shouldn't be forced to take it down.

Gino's is just a cheap Pat's knockoff. And they aren't nearly as good.
http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/ Gino's is half a block away with giant signage.
If you did want to order a cheese steak this is how:
"How to order a Steak"
by I. M. Hungry
Step 1.
Specify if you want your steak with (wit) or without (wit-out) onions.
{if you're not a rookie this should come naturally}
Step 2.
Specify Plain, Cheez Whiz, Provolone, American Cheese or a Pizza Steak.
{we have lettuce and tomatoes / { if we have to read your mind it's 50 cents extra}
Step 3.
Have your money ready.
{do all of your borrowing in line}
Step 4.
Practice all of the above while waiting in line.
{if you make a mistake, don't panic, just go to the back of the line and start over}

From what I read elsewhere the guy will take orders in Italian though. It's just the Mexicans he hates, which is silly (why cut off a market segment?), but maybe it's a good marketing trick. Whichever, more power to the dope.

everybody who lives in philly knows geno's is for tourists. pat's is way better. it's not even close.
2 other points: (1) his grandparents are from frickin' italy and (2) the man can barely speak english himself.

When I'm in Philly, I always look for the little hole in the wall places, they always seem to serve the best cheesesteaks.

All I know is if you walk a half a block from the boardwalk you are doing so at your own risk. The whole city outside of the actual boardwalk and casino/hotel area is horrendous.

Okay now to invite abuse, libs get out your baseball bats :D. This is America, while I don't think you should be forced to speak English it would be nice to make it the official language of government and commerce. In my fantasy world where America is a nation hosting the zenith of civilization and culture the ballots and government documents are exclusively in English. English is taught to every school child. We have English as a Second language for all new citizens and their children. Our public schools would all teach English in addition to a secondary language. However as the salad bowl paradigm becomes more widely adopted the fragmentation of this great land is soon to follow. It happened in Russia, in Yugoslavia, in the Austrian Empire, In Rome, In the British Empire, to the Ottomans, to the Muslim Empire, To the Mongols and if we are not careful it will happen to us. Yes we should embrace our cultures but if we don't have a commonality binding us together then we cannot last. As the government foolishly -with wiretaps, detention of American citizens without trial without the waiving of habeas corpus- undermines the sacred ideas of the constitutional republic and the noble sacraments of the declaration of independence and the federalist and anti- federalist papers we lose the ideas of freedom as a common bond. We need to have a back up or we could have a balkanization effect that we do not need.
I must agree with Sukie that its the shopkeeper's right to have the sign and I think he should change the sign to read Amerkun.

so it happened to every colonial power? must the entire world bow down to amerikkkan "might"? and is our "might" evidenced by a bureaucratic labeling of an official language?
strange argument, IMO.

Technically speaking some of these empires were not colonial. Of all the ones I listed only Britain could be called colonial. No its just that when this country was founded by sons of England, our leaders are english Speaking, and our heritage is predominantly- for better or worse- WASP then we need to have English as the official language.

so if this quoted post is correct (which it's not), and we are an english-only country (which we're not) - why do we need some useless bureaucratic measure to proclaim it? (we don't)
