Karl Rove won't face charges in CIA leak probe
Last Updated Tue, 13 Jun 2006 07:57:04 EDT
CBC News
Top White House aide Karl Rove will not be charged in an investigation into the leak of a CIA operative's identity, his lawyer said Tuesday.
"On June 12, 2006, special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald formally advised us that he does not anticipate seeking charges against Karl Rove," said Robert Luskin in a statement.
Luskin said Fitzgerald's decision should "put an end to the baseless speculation about Mr. Rove's conduct."
For 22 months, Fitzgerald and a grand jury have been trying to determine who told journalists that Valerie Plame was a covert operative for the Central Intelligence Agency.
Federal law in the U.S. makes it illegal to identify such CIA employees.
Plame's name was leaked to reporters in 2003 after her husband, former ambassador Joe Wilson, publicly criticized the Bush administration's handling of the war in Iraq.
Fitzgerald's probe had zeroed in on Rove, President George W. Bush's top political strategist, and Lewis (Scooter) Libby, Vice-President Dick Cheney's chief of staff.

Bil Clinton: U.S. Should Not Pull Out of Iraq
Democrats are distraught over reports that Leakgate Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has decided not to indict senior White House advisor Karl Rove.
A sampling of liberal web sites shortly after the news was announced Tuesday morning featured reaction ranging from disbelief to denial to the desperate hope that Rove has turned states evidence against Vice President Dick Cheney.

If you check the thread you'll see that I didn't buy into the Rove will be indicted excitement.
A lot of this Fitzmas stuff was generated over at DU by the centrist dems who don't cotton much to the more rabid Repub bashers like myself.
As I've mentioned before I was banned from DU in under 24 hours.
Their heart is in the right place but they still can't face the truth about what's REALLY happening in America.
Rove and his fellow pirates are guilty of crimes of several magnitudes past just outing a CIA agent.
As far as I'm concerned, getting all worked up about Rove going down for lying to the Grand Jury or other related charges is like getting excited when Al Capone went down for tax evasion.
Until Democrats get over the idea that Republicans will EVER play fair they are destined to keep taking it in the ass.

Over at Hoffmania(one of the blogs I frequent),there was a post mentioning the plagarism charges being tossed at You Know Who's new book, saying that it was insignificant. And my response was ":censor: that. If an author on the left who was that sloppy and irresponsible in their writing went on national TV and made some wild-ass statements, you'd never hear the end of it from the right. EVER." So I proposed going scorched-earth on folks like that, with whatever legal methods were necessary...facts,satire,smack(but nothing about how a person looks;no one can account for that)so they're never taken seriously again except by their base.
notacon

The Rove affair a “witch hunt”…now Republicans have redefined the meaning of that word like they have so many others.
Fitzgerald is a Republican who conducted a leak-free investigation and apparently decided (we have not heard a thing from him about this yet…all we have heard is from Rove’s lawyers) not to charge Rove. All indications are is that decision came because the burden of proof that Rove knowingly leaked classified information that outed an undercover CIA agent and perjury is very high.
Just because it is too difficult to charge him with a crime does not mean he did not do anything wrong.
This is what we know as FACT:.
Rove leaked the identity of a covert CIA agent in an attempt to discredit a political opponent who rightfully exposed the administrations misuse of intelligence in order to go to war against Iraq.
When it was apparent what he did…he lied about it.
From court filings from Fitzgerald and uncontradicted reportage, we know that Rove did what he was suspected of doing and the administration and Rove lied about it.
Additionally President Bush lied about what he would do about it. He said that anyone who leaked classified information in his administration would be fired.
The White House, in responding to charges that they leaked classified information to discredit a critic said that “that is not the way this President or this White House operates."
Well it is fact. That IS how this president and this white house operates, then they lie about it…and then opposite what they said they would do they reward that behavior.
This president is despicable. He cares more about his own power and the power of his political party than he does about the country.

False. The CIA said that her employment status was classified. Fitzgerald reiterated it when he indited Libby. It was the CIA that initiated the investigation by formally requesting one from the Justice dept. There was never a “witch hunt”.

And could the possibility that Plame's cover has long been blown explain why the CIA was unconcerned about assigning a one-time covert agent to a job that had her walking in and out of CIA headquarters every day? Could it explain why the Wilsons were sufficiently indiscrete to pose in Vanity Fair, and, indeed, to permit Joseph Wilson to pen a highly public op-ed regarding a sensitive mission to which his wife — the covert agent — energetically advocated his assignment? Did they fail to take commonsense precautions because they knew there really was nothing left to protect?

What does this prove? It's just speculation and not only that but speculation about events that happened AFTER Plame was outed.
Try again and this time, make it something you don't pull out of your ass.

A classified State Department memorandum central to a federal leak investigation contained information about CIA officer Valerie Plame in a paragraph marked "(S)" for secret, a clear indication that any Bush administration official who read it should have been aware the information was classified, according to current and former government officials.
Plame -- who is referred to by her married name, Valerie Wilson, in the memo -- is mentioned in the second paragraph of the three-page document, which was written on June 10, 2003, by an analyst in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR), according to a source who described the memo to The Washington Post.
The paragraph identifying her as the wife of former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV was clearly marked to show that it contained classified material at the "secret" level, two sources said. The CIA classifies as "secret" the names of officers whose identities are covert, according to former senior agency officials.
