The estate tax sucks. It is there to placate angry democrats who have personally failed in their lives so they want to screw anyone that is successful. But they are dead at that point so they go after the families instead to keep them from being financially well off.

You're the one who thinks it's fair to take up to 55% of someone's estate, you tell us why you think it's fair - why is it a good idea, Nehe? Other than your silly "screw you, rich guys!" mantra.
Face it, anyone rich enough for the death tax to mean anything already gets around it by paying other relatively rich guys to plan out their estate ahead of time. The only people hit by it are those who don't plan ahead - and that's going to be the relatively young small business owner who doesn't realize the value, hasn't learned it yet.
So tell us, Nehe: Who is getting hit with this tax? How does it screw the really rich? You think Bill Gates is going to pay a penny of this?
It's stupid and antiquated, like so much else in DC. I can't believe in one thread you cry out that they're all crooks/liars/whatever, and in this one cheer on the bureaucracy. Talk about hypocrisy.

who's talking principles, I'm talking money:D
Seriously, with all our foreign adventures, increasing trade deficits, deficit spending, and soaring national debt we need to curb the tax cuts. I'm not saying don't spend, but if you want to spend you have to tax. Or you can revert to classic conservative ideas and don't spend and don't tax. However, W is spending and so he needs to tax. Otherwise deficits soar and the economy gets weaker.

and how does the estate tax screw over the dead guy? that's right - it doesn't.
please post exactly who and how the screwing over will occur? i'm interested to know... you say it doesn't affect Bill Gates? that doesn't pass the sniff test.

Then you aren't sniffing hard enough, or you don't know what the term "estate planning" means.
How does the death tax hurt the newly-dead? Obviously it doesn't, they're dead. But it surely hurts their kin. 55% of their money taken away? How can you say that's a good thing?
You're also implying that any tax that doesn't screw someone is great. Interesting test to determine "goodness" of a tax....
Come on, man, you're the only who thinks it's a good idea: got a real reason? Or is "**** the rich" all you need?

Not at all. You cry out about how gov't is bad in one thread, yet cry out here that gov't is good. Which is it?
I suppose next you'll be arguing in favor of retaining that 3% long distance phone tax that was meant to pay for the Span-Amer war that just finally got repealed..... (now THAT is a logical fallacy! :D)

there is a HUGE difference. Constitution good. idiots bad.
i don't remember that tax getting repealed. i remember a thread or two about people refusing to pay it.

And Bill Frist wants to be this country's next president.
He's already gone down swinging twice this week alone with the "gay marriage" amendment and now the estate tax(which would benefit fewer people than you'd think).

It was a good shot. Might be as you say a good shot. My only point is this will backfire politically. They think its funny this does nothing for the left base no issue. However this can only enhance fire up some of the base on the right. They will turnout.

Depends on the home. The exemption for 2006 is $2 million, 4 million for husband and wife.

The thing is it has to be all or nothing, apparently. You're either stuck with an ungodly tax rate (its actually 46% now), or it needs to be repealed. No solutions in between.
And no, Bill Gates probably won't be paying much, since he's giving his money to charity before he dies, doing his Carnegie thing. But oddly enough, he's in favor of the tax, as is Warren Buffett. But neither of those 2 believe in leaving money to their kids.
