RANGERS TO PASS ON CHARA?
NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports the Rangers have no intention of offering up an $8 million per season contract to Ottawa Senators d-man Zdeno Chara, contrary to a recent report in the Ottawa Sun. Even though Chara was considered the Rangers primary target, the anticipated new five-year, $29 million contract Bryan McCabe containing a "no movement" clause could soon sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs could make it less likely the Blueshirts will pursue Chara, as that contract could push up his asking price. Brooks claims the Rangers aren't about to offer any free agent a contract with a "no movement" clause, with Patrik Elias the lone exception. Brooks suggests the Rangers will look into signing Chara for around $5.5 million but if he passes the club could look at bringing in two free agent d-men for the cost of one marquee one. He expects the Rangers will "move quickly" to sign Philadelphia's Kim Johnsson (a former Ranger) and Buffalo's Jay McKee, and notes " Minnesota's Filip Kuba, Tampa Bay's Pavel Kubina and Dallas' Willie Mitchell" could also be on the Blueshirts list.
WHAT MIGHT THE SENATORS DO?
OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch examines potential options for the Ottawa Senators to improve themselves in the off-season. He suggests goaltenders Evgeny Nabokov and J-S Giguere and Hurricanes forward Erik Cole might be available. Nabokov comes with a $3.3 million per season deal which could make him a risky acquisition and sources tell Garrioch Giguere would be interested in a trade to Ottawa if he's to be dealt. The reason for adding Cole to this list is the Sens nearly acquired him last summer for Martin Havlat and the Hurricanes strong post-season run without Cole might make their management decide they can live without him.
Via the UFA market, Garrioch lists Dwayne Roloson, Manny Legace and Cristobal Huet as possible targets but rules out Carolina's Martin Gerber. He also claims there'll be plenty of competition for Roloson if he hits the market, and the Leafs might make a pitch for him. Garrioch lists Rob Blake, Ed Jovanovski and Ruslan Salei as available blueliners but rules out Buffalo's Jay McKee because of his rising price thanks to his playoff performance. Blake may either stay in Colorado or return to the LA Kings, Jovanovski would be more affordable than Chara but would want a long-term deal, while Salei might be worthwhile if the Sens fail to re-sign Redden although he won't put up a lot of points. Finally, Garrioch lists Michael Peca, Alyn McCauley and Joe Sakic, although he considers Sakic more of a dream target, and rules out Teemu Selanne as he'll likely remain with Anaheim.

But he is Canadian. If we don't sign him there will be a huge resentment towards Darcy. He should have been signed months ago when possible.

Defenseman Bryan McCabe is off the market. He re-signed with Toronto today for five-year contract for more than $25 million.

I didn't want to make another thread so I figured I'd post it up in here, I was just wondering anyone else heard this:
Hat tip to "Todd" for the following Sabres news: "I heard Paul Hamilton, who is the beat reporter for the Sabres, on WGR 550 am this evening. He was discussing Marty Biron and stated that the Sabres would tender Biron the $2.1 million contract needed to retain him. The Sabres will then turn around and trade Biron, kind of a sign and trade deal. Hamilton also went on to say that the Sabres may be looking to turn around their forward depth into a defenceman. Hamilton mentioned the names Max Afinogenov, Derek Roy, Jason Pominville, and Ales Kotalik. He also stated that the Sabres are NOT looking to deal any of these players, but these might be some of the players used to land a 2nd defenceman."

I wouldn't be to upset if Afinogenov was involved in a deal...I just really don't care for him that much

Note how Pyatt isn't in that list of players.
I think the best gain with the least loss would be trading either Kotalik or Poms. They are essentially the same player, Poms is a little better defensively and Kotalik is a little better offensively. I imagine Poms would get something better in return, but it's hard to say.

trade Max or Kotalik not Roy or Pommer..

So you all think the Sabres didn't advance to the finals because they weren't good enough and the injuries had nothing to do with it? The game plan didn't change to compensate for the defense?

I think McKee will stay, even though his childhood dream was to play for the Leafs. He is still very close to home, he should get a fair contract, and his money will go A LOT further here than it will in Toronto because it is so cheap to live here.
He has a lot invested in our community, and I find it far fetched that he could just pack up and leave. He loves it here.

Players lie in order to make more money. Exploiting the good people of Buffalo to get a mass of public support behind them is just one of the tricks they like to pull. Don't fool yourself for one second that if a team like the Thrashers offers him 500k more than the Sabres he is out, community and chance to win be damned.

Why is it so hard for you to understand that Peca IS NOT McKee...?...they are completly different players at completly different times in 2 COMPLETELY different situations
McKee might leave, but he's no more likely to simply because peca was traded.....
That Peca trade must have really made you sad.....favorite player huh?....ya have his jersey? :sadwalk:

Never really liked Peca, always thought he was dirty. McKee may not be Peca but lets be honest: who was the last Sabre that took a paycut to stay in town because they liked it so much? How about Zhitnik and Satan under the current ownership??
It just makes me angry when people prematurely grant athletes sainthood just because they happen to say they love the city.
People, McKee is using you as a bargaining chip. Don't buy into it.

Thats what i don't get.... is Regier any more likely to sign a guy who likes Buffalo?....no.
You're making it up.... it doesn't make any sense.
And why wouldn't he like Buffalo...he's been there for 10 years now....his wife is from there....he has friends......

For all the talk about McKee and Peca being "different people" lets look at it rationally.
They are both hockey players that dedicated themselves to the Buffalo Sabres and were not offered an extended contract for their services. They are both about the same age at the time of the contract dispute. They both have money hungry agents who are telling them every chance they get to look for big money so they can put an extra 50k in their own wallets. They both have expressed their undying love for the wonderful city of Buffalo where nothing could ever possibly go wrong and where every American citizen dreams of living one day. Both of them married beautiful WNY chicks. Both of them made great WNY friends.
Do they diverge here? Does McKee actually mean what he says? I doubt it.
And WXP, the tactic is easy to see. Get public to love you and desire your presence on the team. If Darcy lets him walk, he faces public wrath. Public wrath leads to heads rolling if the Sabres don't do at least as well as they did this year. It is intended to put the pressure on Darcy to cough up more than he wants.

Darcy facing public wrath? Doubtful.... he faced alot of public wrath last offseason (by myself included) and now we're all eating crow.... I trust Darcy and Lindy......if they feel the NEED mcKee they'll sign him...if not he'll leave.... who cares?
I'd love to have Mckee back, if not so be it.

One thing sticks in my mind as a difference between Peca and Mckee. When Peca and Regier played hardball, this was Captain vs. GM in a public spat that got really nasty.
Last off-season, I don't think many of us were sure of Mckee's worth in the "new NHL"; would he be too slow? I think that's why Regier offered a one-year contract; it was a safer bet. Well, in a sense, Regier has lost this bet because Jay has proven he fits right in to this new style of play, so now Regier will have to significantly raise his pay. I think they can do it, especially the way Mckee was forced to miss out on the last game of the playoffs. He's been here in the darkest times, so he may want to take one more shot at this in Buffalo.
I may be wrong, but I'm sticking to this for now.
Pax.

As smart as what? Next time, try to compose an English sentence in order to convince everyone of your intelligence.
Or perhaps you could realize that an unnatural combination of speed and strength who's come off a very good playoff run and makes about a million bucks has trade value.
