"I don't want to walk away from this at all," McKee said
So any of your guys thinking hes gonna walk away from this team to be a leaf next year think again...
Here's a few more of his words:
"I'm very optimistic and excited about moving into contract negotiations with the Buffalo Sabres," McKee said. "I've never hid my feelings for this team, the organization, the fans and the city. My focus right now is nothing more than working as hard as we can to come to a mutual agreement, then moving forward and preparing to take this team further next year."
:sabres:
Theres alot more to the story but I just was happy to read what McKee said and figured Id share.
Theres also so some words by Grier and alittle talk about Rory And Teppo

I remember Mike Peca spouting the same things a few years back. We all know how that turned out.

Peca wanted to get paid too..... we just didn't want to pay him.

The Sabres did at 3 million, but his "love for Buffalo" and "desire to stay with the team" wasn't worth the extra 500k he got on Long Island.

There is a big difference between 3 million and 3.5 million.
and "love" for a team implies that you might take a little less, or choose that team if they are offering the same....
They are still professionals and unless they are ridiculously wealthy fro previously huge contracts I wouldn't expect them to take significantly less than being offered by other teams.

Of course, Mike Peca isn't Jay McKee, and this isn't the same ownership that was here when Mike Peca was trying to get that extra coin.

Peca was offered like 2 million dollars at the time. That is insulting to the captain of your team.

No he wasn't. The truth is in the middle of what we said:
Negotiations between Peca and the Sabres fell apart early last autumn and quickly stalled, even after Peca lowered his demands from $4 million a season to about $3.5 million.
The Sabres didn't budge from their initial offer of about $2.5 million until after Peca announced that he would no longer play for the team.
http://espn.go.com/nhl/news/2001/0624/1218141.html
He wanted 4 million a season, which was absurd then and as history has shown even more absurd now. Note how it said the Sabres didn't budge from 2.5 until after Peca had his little sit-out hissy fit. That's when they went up to 3 million a year.
Darcy has always said that you need to get a bit lucky in the hockey business. The Sabres were very lucky that Peca didn't suck up that salary over the past few years.
Another thing: Chris Drury makes 3 million a year. I don't think you can argue that Peca was or is a more valuable player than Chris Drury.

This is good. If he truely means what he said, then maybe he would take a little less to stay with his TEAM. I really hope that the others feel this way too. It would be great to have the core of our team back next season.

So if we offer Briere 2 mil it's an insult? or Drury when his contract is up?

You know, if there's one good thing that can be said about the New England Patriots' recent success, it's that it has harbored a sense of 'TEAMS win championships' in the sports world. I think McKee/Briere/Grier/etc. are going to buy into this like they have all year and next season we'll be the favorite to win the East. That'll be weird.

The fact still remains that This is what...5 years later, in a different salary structure, with a new owner, and a different players.
I don't see the corralation between McKee and Peca.... remember we were able to trade Peca so that made it an easier decsion....when it became apparent we'd lose him over $$ we tried to get a return....
Losing Mckee over $$ with no return might make you spend a little more on him
