New York state residents' per capita tax burden is again the highest in the country, data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau (http://www.bizjournals.com/search/bin/search?q=%22US%20Census%20Bureau%22&t=buffalo) shows.
The information for fiscal 2004 showed New York's per capita tax bill at $5,260, once state and local taxes are added up.
The New York total was 53 percent above the national average of $3,447 and $339 per person higher than state and local taxes in the No. 2 state, Connecticut.
The Census information also indicated that New Yorkers' state and local tax payments exceeded $100 billion during the 2004 fiscal year.
The Public Policy Institute, the research arm of The Business Council of New York State Inc., said New Yorkers paid $34 billion more in state and local taxes in fiscal 2004 than average Americans did elsewhere in the country.
New York's per capita property tax burden was fifth highest in the nation at $1,677, 60 percent above the national average of $1,049.
