35Pete Welcome to Listen Up! So, tell us a little about you. Native Buffalonian? Work? Play?

Meridius: I was born here in Buffalo in 1980. I moved to California in 1984, so I actually consider myself a Califorian. I moved to TX for a year after I graduated, but I hated it! So I moved back here to better know my family. Some days I think I was abetter off knowing them from a distance LOL

I work as a Shift Manager for a large local chain of conveinence stores. I also do freelance graphics, but I don't get a lot of work. I also don't do a lot of advertising, so I think there's a conenction LOL

As to play...gosh, I don't do much of that anymore! I my spare time Im on the computer, usually hanging at MySpace >_o*. I also spend it with my boyfriend and my three cats. With the weather getting nice Ive been trying my hand at photography. I used to do a lot of costumes for conventions, but Im not going to any this year. Oh yeah, and sex. Can't forget that :D

35Pete: When did you become a Bills fan and how long have you been one?

Meridius: In 1990 or 91, when I was a youngin', I remember sitting on the couch doing my homework. My dad was watching the Bills play the Raiders. I happened to look up and saw the Raiders receiver break awaay for what was going to be a touchdown. Out of nowhere, Nate Odomes runs up to him, takes the ball from his hands, turns around and gets the TD. I thought that was SO cool.

So that would be 15-16 years?

35Pete: There are very few women on the board but you more than hold your own. How do you feel about that? What could the Range do to attract more ladies? Would banning Jayhawk and WXP be a good start? Certainly would make them feel safer, don't you think? :D

Meridius: I was always comfortable hanging out with guys - my interests were always ones the guys like, so being here on a predominatly male board doesn't phase me. As to getting more women, well I don't know. Some might think it being a "male-oriented" place that its nothing but non stop ogging and dirty jokes...and they'd be right....seriously tho, they might not know how to just jump in a conversation on a forum - it can get intimidating. My boyfriend runs several forums. I know he has a "Ladies Only" section on two of them so that women can feel comfortable talking about things.

...and honestly I can't in good conscious have Jay and WXP banned - they've always had my back...or were they just watching my backside...? ;)

35Pete: You are deeply involved in the martial arts. Tell us about that.

Meridius: My Gram sent me to take lessons in order to get me out of the house and make friends. It turned out to be American Kenpo, which I love very much - I have learned so much about physics and how the body works from it. I also gained a great deal of self-confidence. I went back and taught for awhile, but my head instructor stabbed me in the back in favour of the almighty $$ from a parent. I also take a Filipino martial art called Modern Arnis. Its primarily a stick and knife system. Ive met a lot of neat folks and have gotten some really good friends from across the country from some of the camps Ive been to.

35Pete: What is your opinion of the Bills both this year and the coming few?

Meridius: Like always, I hope for the best but expect the worst. Ive seen a lot of bad decisions the last few years - especially last year! I admit to being a JP supporter and feel he should have gotten more playing time - it wasn't like we were going anywhere this season. I think no matter who gets named the starter at camp, they've got to stick with him and not pull him out at the first quiver of suckiness...of course long term suckiness, someone else should get a chance...but the flip-flopping last season was ridiculous.

I think there's a lot of potential all over. We've been missing a few pieces to get back to the winning side of things. I don't know if the guys they're bringing in are the answer, but at least there's an effort. I didn't feel like there was an effort even before the season started.

35Pete: OK, it nauseates me to ask, but this is a standard question, and since you are a lady I have to modify it (Lord forgive me). Who is the hottest guy on the planet in your eyes? Please don't be descriptive. You'll ruin my sex drive for six months if you do that. :D

Meridius: I thought everyone in the world knew of my deep lust for Randy Orton?? :o I also have a rather long list of guys for my wish-harem...I have no shame in admitting my ability to lust :D

35Pete: Who is your favorite Bills player and why?

Meridius: Current or Alumni? Current is my AaB, Aaron Scobel. He always seems to give 100% everytime I see him. Alumni: Nate Odomes, because without him, I would not be watching football :D

35Pete: What did you think of this year's draft?

Meridius:I don't know yet...I don't follow college ball, so I don't know how good thesse guys are. But Levy and Co. feel that they fill some of our gaps, so I will trust in their judgement - until they're proven otherwise.

35Pete: What do you love most and least about Buffalo?

Meridius:I love that most of the folks here are easy to get along with...I also love some of the parks here and how green it gets here once it stops being cold.

I hate the cold the most. I was doing ok when I moved back here until that year we had the 7ft of snow That was a horror story unto itself, that i will spare the details on.

35Pete: Still kickin' it with pink hair?

Meridius:Sadly, no. Its a pain to maintain with my dark (and verrrrrry thick) hair. Also if I tried it again, Id wager Id get fired LOL

35Pete: Who is the best poster on the Range in your opinion?

Meridius:Oh no, Im not picking just one...a lot of people bring different things to the board, so its hard to say who is really the "best"

35Pete: Any final thoughts?

Meridius:Um, I need food, need to shower, and get some batteries....OH you mean in regards to the Range...Um, GO BILLS! :D

35Pete: Well, thank you for sharing. :)

Hey, you do Arnis too, Meridius? Shihan teaches us arnis, as well. Can you recite the twelve basic strikes? :D

Good interview.

Actually, Datu Tim Hartman has reduced it to 10 angles of attack, which I agree with.

I suppose it depends on who you Shihan is learning from...Tim changed up his cirriculum recently. I think its interesting...on one hand you'll have factions keeping things exactly how they learned them...and then youll have others who change, rearrange, and streamline their material.

I could do without the politics, mind you LOL I know far more about some folks than I care to LOL

Yeah, the big debate in Shotokan right now is traditionalists versus non. Whether Heian Shodan is really the first kata taught, whether certain kata should be rejoined the way they were when first designed or kept separate as they are now. Whether you do them the way Itosu taught them or Funakoshi. Pinon versus Heian. Blah.

You learn what you learn. Karate isn't about the names you assign to things or the order in which you teach them. It's about much, much more than thati silliness.

Rawk on! That's what Ive been saying. Its about how everyone can learn the same thing and make it their own. Your favourite technique or form isn't gonna be the same as mine - but its ok. Its about the dicipline and self-confidence....its about learning the basics, progressing to the more complicated techs, getting that BB, and then you realise how you can break apart those complicated techs back to the basics, rearranging them and making them better for you.

...and its all about beating up the boys...JK :D

Great interview I suppose, but I have to wonder if it was mere tokenism to interview a poster with a little over 1,000 posts merely because she is a woman.

I would feel used if I was her however that is only me and my "High Character" values.

Personally, Pete, I don't believe in using the words "rat's ass" AND "sex" in the same sentence.

Then again, that is is only me and I don't want push my sexiual preferences -- as normal as they may be -- upon anyone else.

Meridius. How are the arts for toning and strength training. Just recovering from major arm surgery and need flexibility. Also need toning but can't lift weights. Thoughts?

Meridius
June 2nd, 2006, 12:35:07 PM
I think they're very good. I take kenpo, an open hand system, and Arnis, a stick and knife based art. Youre going to see results a little quicker with the aris, because you have the weight of the sticks.

However, i like to do my kenpo techinques in the air and forms with wrist and ankle weights.

Also I had recommendations from folks who just worked on their basic blocks and strikes with 3 pound weight with results.

YMMV :)

I miss how it doesn't snow unless I feel like hauling up to Yosemite...I miss Foggy days...miss my friends to be honest...I even miss the little bump dividers in the roads...I miss going to San Fran with my best friends family and going to all the best chinatown resturaunts...I miss the 8 hour drive to visit So Cal and going to Disneyland :D I miss the freshness of the produce in the supermarkets. When I first moved to TX, I was SO not impressed by the local supermarket, that I complained up and down it how it couldn't compare to the worst supermarket in my hometown. How I didn't get kicked out, Im not sure.

I don't miss the droughts. But my body just can't handle anything below 85 degrees, it seems.

In short, its home.
