I try to give pit bulls a break; the problem is more often the owner than the breed, but let's admit it -- if ever you were going to create a dog to cause havoc, the pit bull would be the model.
EXCERPT:
CORNING -- Three pit bulls viciously attacked and killed a small poodle and injured its elderly owner Tuesday near Stewart Park.
The attack occurred minutes before 4 p.m. when Stephen Hofstetter, 66, was walking his toy poodle near the corner of Wardell Street and Sly Avenue extensions.
Hofstetter told police three pit bulls charged toward him as he turned onto Wardell Street Ext.
“The dogs were behind a fence and they broke out,” said Mark Strassburg, owner of the dogs. “They saw the dog and tore right after it; it was terrible.”
Fearing for its life, the poodle jumped into its owner's arms as the pit bulls began to attack, police said. The enraged dogs ripped the poodle from Hofstetter's arms and continued the on-slaught.
Hofstetter fled to his home where he was later treated by Rural/Metro Medical Services crews for cuts to his arms.
“I feel bad he got bit. Nothing is right with this whole situation,” Strassburg said. “I'm just thankful it wasn't a kid.”
Strassburg said the dogs will be quarantined for 10 days before being euthanized.
“I'm not going to fight it,'' Strassburg. “I had these dogs for years, and I had no control of them.''
Strassburg will be charged with three counts of owning an unlicensed dog, according to authorities. The investigation will continue and other criminal charges could be filed.
When police arrived on the scene the three dogs were running loose as Strassburg, covered in blood, tried to get the dogs away from the dead poodle.
Strassburg eventually got control of the dogs and put them behind a fence at his 303 Wardell St. Ext. house. He told police the three dogs went “nuts” when the poodle came into sight.
Police said Strassburg was highly intoxicated when the incident took place and there were several cans of Milwaukee's Light in his lawn.

The owner says “I had these dogs for years, and I had no control of them.''
I guess being lit up on Milwaukee's Light at 4:00 in the afternoon might have something to do with that.

This story has bothered me all morning.
The image of that little dog being ripped from his owner's arms, and the old man trying to keep the pit bulls away from the cadaver of his dead pet ... horrific.
I don't hate anyone but I am awfully close to it with the moron who owned those pit bulls.

A New York State lower court has ruled that you cannot ban dogs based on breed via breed-specific legislation.

and, there are a number of breeds that are way more dangerous than pitbulls - dobermans, mastiffs, german shepherds, and komondors come to mind immediately.
they just cost more... and the people who invest the money in the dog take the time and effort to train/socialize it properly. not some white-trash ****-sucking piece of **** ******* with 3 ****ing dogs and can't control one of 'em.

I respectfully disagree, my fellow dog fancier.
There are dogs with stronger jaws than the pit bull.
There are dogs with more powerful bodies than the pit bull.
There are even dogs with more natural aggression than the pit bull.
But nobody combines all of those traits into a single package like the pit bull.

a german shepherd is just as nasty but twice as big.
doberman is way quicker and meaner.
a komondor is bred to protect herds from wolves.
just IMO. i don't wanna get into this, b/c i get very angry when i think about dogs fighting each other. and i need to keep my blood pressure low - there's a playoff game to watch tonight.

I was bit by a German Shepherd when I was two. I owned two dogs when I was a kid and I did love them, but they were special. I'd be perfectly content to never own another dog for the rest of my life.

I have a Bull Mastiff, i got him when he was a pup, i trained him positive and he is the most gentle, sweet dog i've ever been around. It dosen't matter what breed the dog is; if you treat it like shit, and train it to be mean, it's gonna hurt either another dog, or another person. It's a shame that Pit Bulls have become what they are. They are beatiful dogs.

I agree.
And for some strange reason, absolute a-holes who couldn't get a gun permit are allowed to buy pit bulls and abuse them.

Sure there may be some really wonderful pit bulls but what happens if you get one of the dogs that just has something a little "wrong" with it? Some dogs, even with training, can be great under ordinary situations but become a little unpredictable when put in awkward situations or when they are scared or in pain.
You never know what you are getting when you pick a dog out and bring it home, so I've always taken the side of caution and get a dog that I can control if something does happen, God forbid. If a pit bull does snap, you have a major problem on your hands.
I just feel that is irresponsible to take that chance when a family has a baby and gets a new pit bull. You see it all the time. How could these parents live with themselves if something bad happened? I'm sure they all believe that they are different and it won't happen to them, but what if it does?

Any dog can snap -- particularly if they are a purebred. Inbreeding brings character and physical flaws to the surface.
It's just that if a pit bull snaps, he can do so much more damage than, say, a Yorkie or a Peke.

I have a pit, and he is my son. I feed him food from my mouth on occasion just to show how gentle he is. We play fight and play tug rope. He gets more than rowdy sometimes, but never nips at my face. I had a litter of 12 to go along w/ the parents, and decided to keep 2 pups. I thought the pissing contest would be averted by having the pups fixed. Nope. there was still the battle for territory, and I had to give away the pups after coming home to a crime scene. A friend tried to let the dogs outside and they bumped into each other at the door. That's all it takes with pits. i would never have my dog, or any pit, around kids. That is, unless they were raised together. I have never seen a more devoted dog, as a pit raised with a child. The high pain tolerance of pits allows for little ear tugs and tail tugs that might cause a normal dog to bite, but the pit just keeps a happy face b/c it doesn't even bother them. They are insepareable, and pray for anyone trying to harm that child.
What it amounts to is that the pits have a bad rep, but it is not unfounded. The blame should fall squarely on the owners shoulders for a mistreated dog going nuts, but as was stsated earlier, some dogs just don't have " it ". However, you will never find a dog that loves you more, and just wants to be w/ you more than a pit. That is the main reas0n to never put them on a chain. That is what will drive them nuts as quick as anything. The perfect life of a pit is to be their owners side 24/7/365.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go cook some leftovers and mix it in my dog's dish.

I used to own a pit-bull a couple of years ago. Had to give it to my ex (whom I raised the dog with) when I ended up moving into a place that didn't allow dogs. Huge huge dog...about 105 lbs last I checked. I've never had a more gentle dog. It was raised from a puppy around lots of new people coming in and out of the house (I was in college at the time), and has never been threatening towards any human being (although he did have a bit of a problem with occasionally trying to hump visitors). Hell, we'd have parties up in our attic with close to 50 people, and he had no problem with it. He was really good with other dogs as well. He's only had two fights with other dogs...one was another pit (my stupid ass friend waved a steak bone in front of my dog's face, and then immediately gave it to the downstairs neighbor's pit), and the other one was a bulldog that had gotten off his leash and attacked my dog when my ex was walking him outside (that bulldog got ****ed up pretty bad). Long story short, my pit is a loving, loyal, intelligent creature.
That being said, he was still very large and very strong. In the hands of the wrong owner/s, he could have most certainly been dangerous. It's a shame that there are so many scumbags out there that either A) Too stupid to properly socialize and train a dog that is large enough to potentially be dangerous, B)Think it's cool to have an aggressive pitbull that is a threat to anybody other than it's owner (it's sadly common), or C) once choice A has happened, do stupid things like leaving their dog unleashed or having someone walk them that is clearly not strong enough to restrain them.
It's a shame to see a truely great breed be given a bad name because of a few shitheads that have no business owning ANY dog let alone a dog as powerful as a pit.
