According to ESPN.com's sources, Kobe will be changing from #8 to #24.
I think it's gonna look a little weird out there, since he's already established himself as #8.

"In order for a player to change jersey numbers at will, he either has to change teams or have the team inform the league of the decision more than six months in advance. Players who stay with the same team must have worn the same number for four seasons or longer. Sources say the Lakers informed the league of Bryant's wish to change his number by this year's March 3 deadline."
Why is the NBA such a numbers Nazi...?

Probably b/c of merchandising. is it fair for fans who bought his #8 jersey to now have that money basically wasted on a # he doesn't wear anymore? and if they weren't so strict guys would probably change #s all the time- have a bad game change your number!

Why would the NBA prevent themselves from making more money. No other major league does.

If a guy here and thre changes a # they may make more money from fools buying all the #s but if they allowed everyone to do people would get fed up and stop buying them. It's a good rule, the popluar players get associated w/ #s, it's silly to allow them to change when they want to. Jordan didn't look like Jordan in 45, what if Magic was 22 instead of 32? It just wouldn't look right.
