Corning Inc. -- one-time manufacturer of Corelle dishware and broadband fiber optics -- has the hots for Hillary Rodham Clinton. And in an unprecedented tit-for-tat, she is taking care of the normally Republican company.

Ugh.

EXCERPT:
CORNING - Corning Inc. and its generally Republican executives have become one of the largest sources of campaign cash for Democratic U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

Times reporters Mike McIntire and Raymond Hernandez wrote that Clinton, in return, has become one of the company's biggest boosters in Congress.

Campaign finance records show Corning Inc. and its employees gave Clinton $137,000 from 2000 - when she was first elected - through the end of last year. That was the most from any single source, the Times said, with the exception of MetLife.

Corning Inc. also paid for Clinton to travel upstate twice for briefings on issues important to the company and the region, the newspaper reported.

Clinton responded by pushing legislation allocating hundreds of millions in tax dollars to help reduce diesel pollution in 2003. Diesel pollution control products are one of Corning Inc.'s major businesses.

A year later, Clinton intervened both with the White House and the Chinese government to persuade China to drop threatened tariffs on Corning optical fiber products, the Times said. A month later, Corning Inc. Chairman James R. Houghton held a fundraiser for Clinton's re-election campaign at his Corning area home.

In addition to providing Clinton with financial support, the Times said, Corning Inc. has defended her against criticism in at least one upstate newspaper, The Buffalo News. When the newspaper wrote that local leaders were not flocking to Clinton's side, Corning vice chairman James B. Flaws sent a letter to the newspaper detailing the ways she had been helpful to the company and the region.

“She has delivered and continues to deliver for us,” Flaws wrote.
