Word to the wise:
EXCERPT:
HORSEHEADS - Orange and white barrels, flashing lights and portable road signs signal another highway construction season is under way.
And this year, motorists are likely to see something else around major construction projects - more state troopers.
The state Department of Transportation is joining with state police and other agencies to improve road project safety for motorists and construction workers. Extra road patrols are among several visible steps people will notice. ...
The new work zone enforcement effort is based on a law signed in July by Gov. George Pataki.
Motorists already face fines that are doubled for speeding in designated work zones, but the new law has several additional provisions:
•Greater police presence to enforce posted speed reductions.
•Increased use of radar speed display signs in work zones.
•A $50 surcharge on top of fines for speeding in work zones, with the proceeds to benefit a new highway construction and maintenance safety education fund.
•Automatic 60-day driver's license suspension for people convicted of two or more work zone speeding violations.
•Closer cooperation among the Department of Transportation, state police, state Department of Motor Vehicles, state Thruway Authority, local law enforcement agencies and contractors.
