View Full Version : Erik Cole suffers a broken neck
The REAL Sabres
March 5th, 2006, 2:36:27 PM
Oddly enough, the Oswego native's neck was broken by Amherst native Brooks Orpik.
The Carolina Hurricanes have suffered a setback to their aspirations to win the Stanley Cup because winger Erik Cole has suffered a significant neck injury.
The Hurricanes announced Sunday that Cole has a compression fracture in a vertebra in his neck expected to miss at least the rest of the regular season.
Cole, who was hit from behind on Saturday by Penguins defenceman Brooks Oprik, was released from UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh on Sunday and flown back to Raleigh for examination by Dr. Douglas Martini.

He was the best player for the US at the recently completed Olympics in Torino and this news saddens me greatly, these injuries often can shorten careers. His sucsess is one of the reasons the Sabres organization woke up and started taking local hockey talent seriously.God Bless Eric Cole and here's to a speedy recovery!!!

Steve Moore still hasn't made it back yet. This is bad stuff.
There was another ugly hit from behind yesterday in the Caps-Thrashers game that easily could have broken Jamie Heward's neck, by former Sabre and lifelong scumbag Eric Boulton. Ref was 5 feet away and called no penalty. Let's hope this isn't the start of a trend.

wow, horrible. don't know much about Orpik but it was a close play, cole turned at the last second. I bet Orpik feels like crap, i bet he won't get suspended.

This is bad news for Carolina. Erik Cole has been putting together one of the best seasons this year in the NHL and now he is done for a long time. He will have to rehab through it and make sure that he can't further the injury because if he gets another neck/back injury his career might be over.
It sucks when it happens to a great player like Cole but it does happen. This will really hurt Carolina's chances.

Kevin Colley of the Islanders had to retire at 27 last month because of a similar injury. I feel bad for him, and I hope Cole doesn't have to face that. Maybe it's time we put stop signs on the back of NHL jerseys like they do in the minors like Don Cherry suggested. Would Reebok go for that?
Come on, guys! Respect your opponent!

No different than what Domi did to Vanek. Except that you apologize for Domi, and haven't done so for Orpik or Boulton.

Another consequence of the instigator. You never saw this and you never saw the concussions prior to the instigator. I hope the NHL gets its head out of its collective ass before more injuries happen.

my god, comparing domi's hit to that is ridiculous. He pushed vanek from behind, barely a love tap. Cole was against the boards. You are ridiculous!

March 5th, 2006, 9:59:13 PM
Yeah comparing Domi's "hit" to Cole's injury is complete BS. Cole was right infront of the boards and get hit from behind into them. Vanek got pushed or tapped by Domi. Not even close.

it's just stupid. Lala, you have to lighten up man. They are not even close man, Shoud campbell be looking to suspend domi for that? And i never apoligize for Domi, check my posts on his elbow on niedermayer and sucker punch on samuellson.

And I just saw another extremely dangerous hit a few minutes ago in the St.Louis @ Vancouver game. Barrett Jackman got driven face first into the boards...he was dazed and I doubt if he'll finish the game (the Blues are KILLING the Canucks...again) but he appears to be okay.
The ref caught this one...5 minute major and a game misconduct. I forget who delivered the hit, but it was really ugly.
Funny how these things always come in waves. I hope it ends NOW!
I hope Erik Cole is okay...he's a hell of a player and I'd give anything to see him in a Sabre uniform!

Tell Darryl Stingley you can't break your neck away from boards...
bduff54
March 6th, 2006, 11:02:34 AM
thats not fair man, comparing what Domi did to the tragedy of stingley is pathetic and you should be ashamed of yourself. A slight nudge in the back is not the same as getting nailed by a 200 pounds missle of a free safety. I can't believe you just used Stingley to try and get a rise out of me. That is really bad Jeff, What domi did happens 15 times a game in hockey, he nudged vanek in the back, he fell over and a little scrum started. That is not the same as a WR getting paralyzed going over the middle in one of the most violent games in sport. It's also not the same as Erik cole going head first into the boards.

The domi and orpik hits weren't anything alike. The domi hit was uncalled for, but you see stuff like that all the time after the whistle blows, personally I think Vanek embellished it abit to try and draw a penalty, but I don't think he was ever in any mortal danger.
The orpik hit on cole just looks like bad luck, its the checkers responsibility to avoid hitting someone from behind up along the boards like that even if they do happen to change direction at the last second, but I don't think he did it with any malicious intent.

i agree Dahl, Orpik probably feels horrible about it. I am not sure if he is a dirty player . If Domi had done that to cole it would be a different story, he should be suspended because he has a history of losing his mind and cheapshotting people.

depends on the circumstances i think, like if niedermayer or Samuelssons careers had been ended after the Domi hits then Tie should be forced to retire. Same with Matt Johnson, what he did to beukeboom was disgusting, same with Bertuzzi. But a situation like this one? Nah, it was a close call, no maliciosness involved and it wasn't pre-meditated like the ones i just mentioned.

No you don't.
The Queefs aren't a major sports franchise either. Nor are the Raptors.
I've had the displeasure to live in Toronto. It offered the worst standard of living of any city of lived in.
The only thing Toronto is long of is arrogance, and thanks for highlighting that. Oh, and you have lots of homeless people. Congratulations.
