It was the kind of January weather record that Western New Yorkers can really appreciate.

The temperature at Buffalo Niagara International Airport hit 59 degrees at 1:12 p.m. Wednesday, tying the record high for Jan. 11 set in 1975.
The very warm day continues a trend of warmer-than-normal weather that started the last part of December. A high temperature of 41 or above was recorded on five of the last nine days of 2005.

That trend continued into January, which was running an impressive 9.3 degrees above normal even before Wednesday's record-tying high.
Buffalo dentist Dr. John Metzen wasted no time in taking advantage of the warmer temperatures. On Wednesday, the longtime windsurfer was out on the water for the first time since late November.

"Everything was great," he said, "except the wind never materialized. We need to talk to the weather forecasters. But you know what? It still was a beautiful day to be outside. When you can be on the water in January, it's a plus."
He recalled that it was even warmer about this time last year.
