Pete Carroll, who coached Southern California from mediocrity to dominance since being hired in 2001, agreed to a contract extension with the school.
Neither Carroll nor USC athletic director Mike Garrett would provide specifics of the deal.

"We love what Pete is doing here," Garrett said in a statement issued late Wednesday. "He does a great job of winning games and graduating players. Pete wants to be at USC as long as he can and we want him here, too."

College coaches always sign contract extensions, even if they think they may leave sometime soon. And the school wants them signed, too.

It's because they always want to have another 3-4 years left on their deal when selling their program to their recruits. It's tough to sign players when the players think you may be leaving.

But even though they do this, there's almost ALWAYS a way out of it if they choose. So really, extensions are just formalities for recruiting purposes. They don't really mean all that much.
