James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, was found dead at 1:30 a.m. ET Thursday in his apartment in Lutz, Fla., a suburb of Tampa, Debbie Carter, a spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, confirmed Thursday.

A death investigation is under way, and the spokesperson said that the county medical examiner's office or the hospital at which James Dungy was pronounced dead would have a ruling on the cause of death.

James Dungy officially was pronounced dead this morning at University Community Hospital in Tampa.

Tony Dungy has left the Colts and is in Tampa. Indianapolis plays at Seattle this Saturday.

No, the first thing I thought of was these guys now have something (one) to play for. Remember Trent Green? Brett Favre?

This is horrible. Tony Dungy is truly one of the quiet, classy guys in the NFL. Let's keep his family in our thoughts.

Maybe it is just me.... i always assume the worst of people because thats what I usually see.....

It in no way changes how horrible this is for Dungy, and for the kid....

I can't help it, whenever a young kid is found dead i assume they' OD'd or something, thats just me.

I heard on the radio down here in Florida that they are not ruling out suicide.

Whoa whoa whoa, they deserve a Super Bowl because his son is dead? Haha, thats pretty much the funniest thing I've ever heard.

I feel for Dungy and his family, but you dont cross the death of his son with the Colts playing football, it aint right.

Tragic. Suicide hurts everyone involved in it, leaves you questioning SO many things about yourself when someone close to you does it.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Dungys.

It has not been confirmed yet that it was a suicide so until the truth comes out I wouldn't speculate

That is correct. The Sherrif's department said it appears to be. Until official word though appearances can be deceiving. No matter though this is going to heart wrenching for that family whatever the reason. It is going to be a very tough year for the Dungys.

Dungy is well-respected in Indy, and behind the scenes has done a lot of good in the town...name a cause, and odds are he's done something to help.(And it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to one day see him take this tragedy and use it to help others deal with what he and his family are facing now.) He's got a lot of good karma built up in the bank, not just in Indy but in Tampa too-where James was a fixture at Bucs practice.

Indy now has a different type of motivation for winning it all....it was going undefeated, but it's now winning it for their coach.

For the Dungy family, and the Colts...you're in our thoughts. :sadwalk:

No you got me wrong man. I was trying to say that its gonna be like one of those inspirational things to win it for him. Like MJ when his dad died or Favre and that monday night game after his dad passed.
