There are certainly arguments for and against it...but I think comparisons to other teams and their jersey retirements aren't useful...

it people here want it, and the Sabres want it...give it to them, thats what its about right?

Gare I can understand... Lafontaine's best was elsewhere.

Honoring them yes, removing there numbers from other players, no. 16 & 18 are very popular numbers for players around the league. It is not necessary thats all.

I totally agree with Gare's 18. Now if the Sabres would only bring him back for the broadcasts.

Pattys I am not sure about. But seeing the Sabres are, I sure hope they retire 89 too someday. Mogilny did score 76 in 77 games, and seeing Patty's 16 is being retired for one great season, Mogilny's should be too. But Patty was loved off the ice, where Alex was ran out of Buffalo.

The Stat that I most the love about Gare is he's the only Sabre to score 50 goals and had over a 100 PM's in a season!
In 1975-76 he had 50 goals and 129 PM's

The only other player that I know of to do this is Mark Messier!

Both deserve to be retired. Some are arguing about LaFontaine's, and I do understand, even though he is my favorite hockey player of all-time. However, I think Patty was instrumental to the organization and fans both on and off the ice and did so much for the city during his time here - he deserves it IMO.

This is a great way to say thank you to Pat for his time spent in Buffalo. He was amazing when he was here, was terrific within the community, and had he not had his time cut short, he could have been the greatest Sabre of all time.
