Now Accepting Apologies
All those BRILLIANT prognosticators that said the Buffalo Sabres would be the worst team in the NHL…you may email Darcy Regier an apology. Now, I realize that it’s just 5 games into the season, but the vision that Darcy had for this team, in the opened up league has played out beautifully. Losing Alexei Zhitnik and Miro Satan looked tough at the time, but the emergence of some young players has made all that pain, go away quickly.
The Sabres are no pushover. And…if you haven’t watched them play yet, check it out. The team averages about 40 shots per game…and every game they’ve played this year has been worth the price of admission.
K…here’s the column…
The Kids are Allright
Sabres rookie Thomas Vanek still doesn’t have an official NHL goal, but he scored for the win last night. Vanek’s “goal” sealed the Sabres shootout victory, capping another solid outing for the Sabres rookie. He finished up with a pair of assists as the Sabres skated off with a 4-3 shootout win.
Buffalo opened the scoring as Daniel Briere banged home his own rebound. The play started in the corner, where two Lightning players knocked each other over on the way to Vanek. Briere picked up the scraps…skated in and scored. Vanek has 4 assists on the season through 5 games, but he’s still looking for that elusive first NHL goal.
It’s becoming one of those things that you don’t have to worry about though. Vanek is getting his chances every night, and he’s consistently buzzing around the net, generating scoring chances for himself and teammates as well.
