Today long time Blue Jays broadcaster passed away at the age of 66. I grew up listening to Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth calling Jays games. With being so close to Toronto I have listened to hundreds if not thousands of games that Cheek called. He was a great announcer who while being the Jays announcer was never much of a homer like the Yankees crew or many other announers. Like other baseball broadcasters Cheek had plenty of good stories to pass on to the listeners during the slow times of the games. Last season was the first season without Cheek behind the mic for the Jays. Tom Cheek will be missed by all Jays fans who listen on the radio.

The next step the Jays should do is name the press box in his honor, much like the Arena did for Ted Darling.

And I echo the RIP for Cheek. CityTV in Toronto ran audio of the Joe Carter home run call in the '93 World Series that won it for the Blue Jays, and it brought back quite a few memories.

Toronto may not be a baseball town, but one might be surprised at how knowledgeable the true fans are. I was impressed by the ones around me when I saw a game there last year.

RIP Tom
