Sabres coach Lindy Ruff, general manager Darcy Regier and six players — Daniel Briere, J.P. Dumont, Martin Biron, Rory Fitzpatrick, Jay McKee and Adam Mair — flew to Chicago on Friday for the funeral of the 5-month-old daughter of Curtis Brown.

Brown was in the Sabres organization from April 1996, when he joined the Amerks for their run to the Calder Cup, until March 2004 when the Sabres traded him to San Jose. His daughter died suddenly earlier this week.

Also, Amerks assistant coach Doug Houda flew home to Alberta earlier this week for the funeral of his mother, who had been ill.

That's horrible. No parent should have to bury a child, especially an infant. Unbelievable!

My condolences to Curtis Brown and his family.

I've always liked Curtis Brown as a hockey player; and as I work at the Arena, I got to know Curtis more importantly as a human being. Curtis truly is a great guy, who was the type that would talk with anybody and carry on a conversation with you as long as you'd like.

Curtis & Family do not deserve a loss like his.
