Marian Hossa - W - Senators

The Senators may be forced to trade Marian Hossa if he receives an arbitration award of $5 million as is feared.
Although his point totals are similar to those of Jarome Iginla and Joe Thornton over the past three seasons, we are not prepared to put Hossa in their class at this point. That said, he is certainly worth about $5 million per season. Ottawa better wake up to that reality or risk losing one of the NHL's better young snipers.

This is taken from Rotoworld.

Personally, we probably won't because of his salary, but the way I see it, we could trade G Martin Biron ($2M+) and draft picks or something to bring in this legitimate scorer who would make about $5M. We got rid of Satan and Zhitnik who were making about $7M combined and so far have only spent $2M that we saved and that was on Numminen. Getting rid of Biron and more and bringing in Hossa still would leave cash remaining to either pocket as the Sabres always do or to spend. Hossa is the type of player that would satisfy management because his presence alone would show the fans the commitment to put a solid product and contender out on the ice and ownership would be rewarded with an increase in such things as ticket sales, concessions at the game, and merchandise (Hossa Jerseys). Granted, Hossa is not Gretzky, Lemiuex, LaFontaine, or etc, but he is a great offensive player who could combine with Briere to form a very entertaining and explosive line.

Martin Havlat may very well be following Hossa out of Ottawa after this season.

I'd like to see it happen too. But,right now....I'm doubtful that it'll happen. Then again, who knows?

yeah hossa is awesome, and probably worth $4-5million, but that hardly strengthens our very weak defense. i'd rather spend the money on a #1 D-man like Hamrlik or Stevens.

I disagree to an extent - yeah I think our defense could be strenghtened a bit too, but Hamrlik is not worth that kind of money and I like Stevens, but he is getting old and who knows what type of value he'll have in this new system. Hossa is a sure thing because it appears obvious that the new system will only help his game. We had our chance IMO to spend on defense, as in Rafalski, Zhitnik, Gonchar, etc....but we passed. Also, you can't win games unless you can put the puck in the net and Hossa does just that.

i agree that great offense is worth it, but we'd have to shed a couple of our forwards to be able to commit that much money to one player. defense wins stanley cups, regardless of the new rules, and i'm not willing to sacrifice our entire back line for one player. if we spend $5million on a forward, we'd have to dump a couple forwards to be able to shore up our D, which HAS to be improved from where we are right now. all this aside, i still think we should get one $3million D-man, one third-line D-man and maybe a decent second-line veteran forward.

Like I said, I too think our defense could use improvement, but if you got a chance to get a star in the making in Hossa I think you do it. Think of it this way:

Loss of Satan and Zhitnik frees up $7M
Numminen signs for $2M
$5M is remaining - trade for Hossa and shed Biron + more
= about $2M+ left over
THEN, you could pull a trade for a player like D Aaron Miller which has been talked about for some time

Roster would be:

Dumont - Briere - Hossa
Hecht - Drury - Kotalik
Afinogenov - Roy - Vanek
Pyatt - Mair - Grier

Numminen - Kalinin
McKee - Miller
Tallinder - Jillson

Miller - Noronen

Hossa will be an UFA after this year. Why the hell would you want to deal for Hossa? What are you planning to trade?

Why the hell would I want the old and expensive Aaron Miller? And who are you trading for him?

1. I would deal Biron + more for Hossa, as I've stated numerous times already.
2. Why the hell would I want - it's not your team, it's our team 1st off. Secondly, I'm not saying I'm a huge fan of Aaron Miller's, but his name is a name being thrown around in numerous rumors to Buffalo, so I figured I'd mention him here seeing as to how it seems like it's a possible move the Sabres may look into - but I don't know who they'd be trading for him.

Why would Ottawa want Biron? They have Hasek and Emery. "+ more" is pretty vague. You have no idea who to give up.

Our team? Then why did you mention YOU would deal Biron above? I have no problem with any of us saying I with the Sabres, because it is our team. Just stop accusing me of exactly the same thing you are doing. And trying not to do it in the exact same post that criticizes me for doing it.

Miller is mentioned because he's local. He's also overpaid and old.

So we should acquire Miller and Hossa for somebody. Good plan. We should also acquire somebody, and trade somebody for him, and then sign him to some contract. We'd have some team then.

Marian Hossa is an excellent player and I doubt anything the Sabres have on the roster besides Vanek could pry him away from Ottawa, especially considering Ottawa is in our division.

Hold on now, don't jump the gun. After this season somebody will be a UFA, and we could wait and get him.

We would have to overpay to get Ottawa to ship him in the dvision, Muckler is not dumb.

Man, the Sabres are going to be weak this year.

Sens have no need for Biron.

Wait what's this...

NEWSFLASH! NEWSFLASH!

Marty Biron has no real trade value. There are better veteran goalies still in FA and few teams that need starters. Darcy re-signed the player he can't trade while letting 2 go that he could!
