The Sabre Dance is a movement in the final act of Aram Khachaturian's ballet Gayane, completed in 1942. The Sabre Dance movement evokes a whirling war dance on a mazurka rhythm, where the dancers display their skill with sabres (swords).
Because of its exceptionally exciting rhythm, the Sabre Dance obtained a place in its own right in concert practice, leading also to various adaptations in popular music.
Plate spinners and other human tricks innovators highly contributed to its popularization, notably The Ed Sullivan Show, wherein it was played while plate spinners performed their act.
The Sabre Dance was also covered by performers such as jazz player Woody Herman and rock and roll musician Dave Edmunds. The music was featured in an episode of "The Simpsons" as Bart uses Grandpa Simpson's dentures to swing around on a ceiling fan.

i ment the music that kind of sounds like circus music and they played it when the players went out on to the ice before the game

The timpany(drums) that start it off, and follow thru in the background are the best.

Many years back I was at an Islander/Capital game on Long Island and they played the Sabre theme when the Islanders came out. I almost had to jump the organist/DJ and kick his @&&. But then again it was shortly after they traded LaFontaine for Turgeon and many others so the team was "technically" full of Sabres.

Maybe they'll do it again for Satan and Zhtinik ;-)

I always liked the "our song" intro they used to use from Yes (anybody?) Or that Bush toon...

The Bush tune you're thinking about is called "Machine Head" - I'm not sure about the Yes tune, however.

If you're a Sabres fan and you don't get chills listening to a full rendition of the Sabre Dance.... well, you're either dead or you're too drunk to notice the chills.

That's one of the greatest, most noticeable theme songs. It's on par with any other famous team song.

They played the Saber Dance song before games at the Aud.

Anyone remember the lady on ice skates used to come out and dance with a saber in her hand, then she would throw it against the boards and it would stick there.

that was back in the Punch Imlach days...

Here's the better version, that's just a clip. Click the "Listen" button. It's a story, but if you fast forward to the 6 minute mark, it's got the classic version we all know and love.

The Sabres also used a rock version of Sabre Dance a few years back. What was that one?

When I was in high school @ 1981 or so, I had a british import album by The Boys, called The Hell With the Boys .

It had a kick-ass punk version of Sabre Dance as the first track. My brother in Oshawa has all my old vinyl...I should see if he still has it...
