Hey guys, my wife and I have been recently considering a foreign adoption and I was wondering if any of you have done this or may have family or freinds who have? If you have would you mind telling me a little about the process as far as what you went through? Any advice would be appreciated.

Feel free to PM me if you want.

my friend is writing her dissertation on how the romanian child welfare system abuses the ability to adopt their kids overseas. not much help, i know, but it should be really interesting. :)

Contact an attorney in your area, or an adoption agency that specializes in foreign adoptions. Make sure they are experienced in the process of the country you plan to adopt from.

Make sure you check out the agency and the attorney pretty thoroughly before you agree to anything. Prior experience in international adoptions is a key.

I've handled a number of adoptions, but wouldn't consider handling an international one, since I'm totally unfamiliar with the process from an international standpoint.

Maybe this will help as general background (I haven't read it, so I don't know if it'll help):

Romania is a wreck. I saw a 20/20 episode on Romanian orphanages a few years ago that was absolutely heart-breaking.

My aunt and uncle adopted two kids in separate adoptions from Guatemala. I'm not real sure of the nuts and bolts of the process, but I do know it took over a year to complete each one and they had to fly down to visit the kids and complete certain paperwork a few times before they were allowed to bring them home.

Dude why would you adopt from another country when there are thousands of american children that need help?

That's a fair question and I'll try to answer it as best I can. First off we are looking at adopting a girl from China. We are able to be specific about the sex because in China the mortality rate for girls is very low because families want boys. Many of these babies are left in the hospital to die, they actually have death rooms for these babies. We would like to actually try to save a life. That is the main reason for this.

Thanks for all the responses guys you have been helpful. I know it will be a grueling process but hearing about first hand experience helps out a little more.

General guidelines. Very general guidelines, its not a do it yourself project. Good Luck!

One of my good friends was adopted from Romania. I think he still has issues stemming from how he was treated there but it's great that he is now in a good home where he can enjoy life.

This is what we are hoping we can provide for a child as well. my wife's best friend was a foreign adoption from Korea and I think she has had a better life here. definitely more opportunities.
