The results of the NHL's entry draft lottery, and who gets the No. 1 overall pick, will be carried exclusively on The Sports Network in a special half-hour show on Friday at 4 p.m. (EST).

TSN, which is the rightsholder for the 2005 NHL entry draft in Ottawa on July 30, will carry the lottery event live from New York, where the NHL board of governors will be meeting to ratify the new collective bargaining agreement, approve rule changes for the 2005-06 season and conduct the lottery to determine the order of selection for the entire draft.

The big prize, of course, is talented youngster Sidney Crosby of the Rimouski Oceanic, whose scoring exploits have made him the clear No. 1 choice and a potential franchise player.

Every team in the NHL has a shot at winning that first overall pick in a slightly weighted lottery.

So,apparently the NHL has gotten a little bit of brains after all. Earlier on,as the Toronto Sun's Al Strachan noted, the league had earlier rebuffed any PR moves to burnish their image...as if they believe the mere fact that hockey is back will bring fans rushing back to the rinks.

They should run it like those mid-70's Canadian Olympic Lottery shows LOL

So,apparently the NHL has gotten a little bit of brains after all.Think again. Sure the are televising it, but just in Canada!! Same old, same old. No wonder the sport could never catch on in America. The "New" NHL shouldn't start off continuing their half-assed promotional efforts.

Think about it, Jeff. How many people are going to knock off work early to watch Bettman's balls drop ?

It's really only the hardcore fans who will watch it live. The casual fans will be able to watch highlights on Sportscenter.

If the NHL doesn't have a national TV deal in the US, they would have to buy network time and somehow I don't think they would get good bang for their buck by televising the lottery.

Very true. The ESPN deal is up. Correct?

Yes. They did not pick up the $60 million option for next season, but were open to the possibility of retaining the rights for less money.

I just don't know if they'll have the live footage of the actual "lottery" or be in studio with a host and Hradek, Melrose and/or Parm.

TSN & ESPN are in the same orgnization I would not be suprised if ESPNews at the very least cuts over for atleast the #1 pick, maybe 1-5 or 10. But I will have the NHL.com stream running though I think that the server will crash because a majority of hockey fans will still be at work and will click in to see.

Also, watching SportsDesk tonight, they were advertising "Hockey Day" on Friday beginning at 4 PM too. I heard "carry live" and bits and pieces of other stuff, so keep MSG on the Last Channel.

Probably right. And I'll be watching.

Just to clarify: ESPN only has a 20% stake in TSN. That's the maximum a foreign company can have under Canadian broadcast law.

Well exclusivity may be limited to Canadian broadcast rights, it won't be on Rogers Sportsnet. If it is complete exclusivity I have a problem thinking that in the market that they want to improve the most, they would blackout entirely in favor of a Canadian broadcaster. You really won't have to convince a Canadian to watch hockey, its in their DNA. They will lose their Pierre Trudeau decoder rings and are cut off from the national maple syrup supply if they don't. The targets have to be the US audience. Remember it is not just the draft lotto but the entire relaunch conference. They may not touch Superbowl ratings or even Spelling Bee ratings but it will have an audience.

TSN owns the broadcast rights to the draft (I assume that they bought them) and they'll broadcast as they see fit. Now that the NHL has decided to allow TV coverage of the lottery (part of the draft), then tough titties if your network decided not to bid for rights to the draft.

If the other networks (including US networks) wanted to pony up at the appropriate time, then they would own the rights.

Gee,does that mean the first Ottawa franchise will resurrect itself? I don't think the Renegades will be too happy they're returning. Plus,Benny Hinn can't work THAT kind of miracle.

Rumour has it that the Renegades are losing 5 million a season.

I went to a game (free tix, otherwise you'd never catch me there) on July 1 in Ottawa & if the empty seats were any indication, expect them to lose even more this year.

I heard on WGR 550 that they were selecting the draft order from 30th on, so whoever gets the 1st pick, we wont know until last.

Any truth to that? It doesnt make much sense to be because then the teams with 4 balls would have a better chance at a worse pick. I think WGR is on crack or something.

You lost any credibility you had when you said you like watching soccer.

Besides, you watch junior hockey. I have nothing against junior hockey, but it is a lower level of hockey, as the CFL is compared to the NCAA or NFL. What's your problem, besides snobbery? They're all wonderful to watch.

г
July 22nd, 2005, 12:00:41 PM
No problem here.

I just don't think the CFL is (as a professional sport) up to my standards of what I would pay for to watch. Apparently a lot of people agree with me, judging by the empty seats.

Apparently, the actual draw is done behind closed doors, with Price Waterhouse supervising.

Bettman will be opening sealed envelopes with the results of the draw that happened an hour before and reading them.
